Thinking about it, I really should have said 'Nice Day' not 'La Mer Enchantee' but definitely meant MGATHH, anyway. They are sort of semi-classical psycho-pop, I guess. You can quite probably hear some of it via this (http://www.morgansmusic.net) comedically over-engineered and virtually unnavigable website but don't know if it's anyone else's cup o' tea.

'Mercy On Me' is amazing! 'Hurt' is slated to be the next UK single though.

Shame! I think it's one of the best performances, from a soul perspective, that I've heard in many years.

What struck me right off was that you could tell this was a Linda Perry song in ten seconds. And then I thought - as an example - of how much this reminded me of Pink's "Family Portrait," which I then remembered was not written by Linda Perry. But there's a sound that Linda and Pink created that Christina glommed onto. (And of course, this does sound like a whole bunch of other Perry songs: "My Vietnam," for instance.)

I can't figure out what any of the singles from Back To Basics will be really - 'Candyman' I assume, but 'Mercy On Me' is a good bet too.

I love the way it's camp and silly and moving and absolutely steeped in tradition all at once.

Tom - if the Aly & AJ seems too rawk for Poptimism there's a dance remix of it that might suit. I referred to it on the ILM Teenpop thread. It's not as good as the original, but it's pretty groovy nonetheless. I keep meaning to recommend it to [livejournal.com profile] jauntyalan for the podcast. I only have it on CD not as mp3 sorry.

First verse of the real "Rush" (haven't heard the remix) has electro-skitter beats, and from there the lava overflow of the song ought to be enough to propel the dancers, I'd think.

I'd have thought 'Rush' was totally poptimism-friendly, although the unfamiliarity factor might relegate it to early doors.

my sep highlights = both artists that debuted in '99!

[identity profile] chezghost.livejournal.com 2006-10-04 01:15 pm (UTC)(link)
oh i could've said Simian's 'Tits & Acid', or Xtina's song about SPANKIN', or DJ Wrongtom's mix of 'LDN'.

2nd, 3rd, 4th etc. best things heard in September

SONGS
DJ Webstar & Young B - "Chicken Noodle Soup"
Cast of High School Musical - "Getcha Head In The Game"
Hot Chip - "Colours"

CEEDEEs
M2M - Shades of Purple

I-F Mixed Up In The Hague Vol.1
Reissue of seminal electro/italo disco mix from 1999 (that year again!). Stunningly good from beginning to end.

ELO 30th anniversary reissues: Face The Music and A New World Record
The latter is ELO's greatest record, I think. Oddly, I've never owned a copy of this until now, although I used to have a lo-fi pirate copy of most of the songs on cassette. One song which, bafflingly (with hindsight), I didn't bother to tape is "So Fine". The clue is in the title!

Two more good songs new to me in Sept (w/ links):

JoJo - 'Baby It's You' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QmxVl0VsJyk)

Fedde Le Grande - 'Put Your Hands Up For Detroit' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RPFxnvR_puI)

I want to put in a good word for Nelly Furtado's "No Hay Igual," which she streams on her MySpace page. Better than "Promiscuous" and "Maneater." Flashing percussion, quick flicks of light, Seurat into Van Gogh.
