ELTON FACTS:

pity Marcella Deroit's cover of 'Ain't Nothin Like The Real Thing' as a duet with Elton wasn't listed (it did chart) as it's not bad.

    Nikita ft George Michael?

Anyway, Step Into Christmas is pretty much my favourite festive song. I could tick it 22 times all on its own.

    His middle name is Hercules

    It never! That's brilliant.

    [identity profile] carsmilesteve.livejournal.com 2006-09-08 01:23 pm (UTC)(link)
did he give himself this middle name, like the rest of it, or was he christened Reg Hercules Dwight?

I've never really 'got a handle on' Elton - I like some of his stuff, don't like a lot of it, simply can't remember a lot more. My wife hates him!

"Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" - his best song, really great.

"Nikita" - I thought this was v.deep aged 11 or 12. More ticks please!!

A soul fan friend of mine used to rave about his sessions w/Thom Bell. (or was it Gamble and Huff) - this was his gateway into Elton fandom.

I thought the video was even deeper... Elton, at the russian border in his rolls, lusting after the russian soldier lady. She'll never know anything about his home.

    [identity profile] chezghost.livejournal.com 2006-09-09 10:03 am (UTC)(link)
when i found out Elton was gay i was like "but what about the Russian lady in that video eh Mum?"

    [identity profile] jauntyalan.livejournal.com 2006-09-08 01:13 pm (UTC)(link)
i managed about a dozen ticks

    [identity profile] the-roofdog.livejournal.com 2006-09-08 01:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, I don't see how anyone's going to use 22. There is nothing to tick after (and including!) S4CR1F1C3.

More love for Philadelphia Freedom and HONKY CAT pls!

    But then again no

    [identity profile] freakytigger.livejournal.com 2006-09-08 01:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I am also undecided - but less so - as to the merits of Mr TAUPIN. (i.e. mostly I think he's rub).

    Yes.

I've even gone off the original 73 version a bit, tho' with time I'm sure I'll learn to love it again.

Where did "Empty Garden" go? "Levon"? "TINY DANCER", WAHHHH?

    [identity profile] dubdobdee.livejournal.com 2006-09-08 01:45 pm (UTC)(link)
was elt going to king crimson's singer? WHAT DID THEY FAIL HIM ON GIVEN WHO GOT THE JOB? (he 12 trillion x an improvement on ANYONE who EVER SANG for KC)

    [identity profile] jeff-worrell.livejournal.com 2006-09-08 03:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. (Gentle Giant also turned him down allegedly)

But Kat's "Fact" #2 is wrong. Elton and Bernie wrote one of six songs for Lulu as part of "A Song For Europe" 1969. It came sixth and last in the voting ("Boom Bang A Bang" won and became the UK's Eurovision entry that year, finishing joint first in the latter Contest)

    [identity profile] piratemoggy.livejournal.com 2006-09-08 03:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Is it just me or does 'Smiley Faces' by Gnarls Barkley rampantly plagiarise 'I'm Still Standing?'

I am always very disappointed that 'Still Standing' by Alexis Strum/Kylie is not the Elton song. Assuming the Elton song is the one I am currently thinking of... it's got a panano in it so I assume it is.

I didn't manage 22 ticks but there was a lot more there than I expected. I hate Disney films with a passion but I do like his Lion King songs. Actually, maybe we should do film music/musicals canons? The Disney one would be 400,000,000 sections long of course but there is some ace pop on there.

    [identity profile] chezghost.livejournal.com 2006-09-09 10:04 am (UTC)(link)
'Smiley Faces' reminds me more of Billy Joel's 'Tell Her About It' or Hall & Oates 'Maneater' - there are lots of songs with that kinda beat.

    Ego

The unknown gem in EJ's tiara.

Good stuff from Marcello on "Ego" and some other Elton songs here (http://cookham.blogspot.com/2003_09_21_cookham_archive.html).

John Peel regularly said that Elton was one of the best honky-tonk piano players he'd ever known, and always wanted him to come in and play an instrumental session, but he never did.

Hmmm, sorry to be Mr Know-it-all-about-Elton on this thread, but in fact he did!

    Details on this page (http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/johnpeel/sessions/1970s/1973/Dec18eltonjohn/)
