Last week everyone's favourite Russian faux-lesbians Tatu won their battle with Bouncey & the 'Babes to claim best number one of 2003, with a whopping 46 ticks. Poor old Snedders fared as badly as his follow-up single with only 2 votes of confidence, though looking at the text box some might say Gary Jules was the greater hate figure of the year (blatantly because you all had a tenner on 'Proper Crimbo' to hit the Xmas top spot instead). Now we come to the year where SmallKat first discovered the the magical world of the pop charts - 1988!

my fave thing about U2 has always been Edge guitar noizes tho so any track where they're quite dirty or screechy tends to work for me (he toned it down after 'Pop', the poxy fewl)

Surely tho the best Edge guitar noises are the delicate ripply Eno-esque ones?

I was a Q reader at the time and you could hardly move for Daniel Lanois.

yes but he toned the Eno down as well, bah. Edge is wasted on all 00s U2. WHY DO THEY STILL MAKE RECORDS?

i ph34r it would take a TANYA HEADON to pick out the full horror in "three chords and the truth"

tho here is a start --- they DON'T just use 1xguitar, 3xchords, so where is yr SO-CALLED TRUTH NOW mr "vox"

I took an interest in the charts from late 1986 (late starter!) so 1988 still seems shiny fresh and exciting to me! I love most of these, and can still sing the ones i don't like, pretty much. I was also in lust with both the first two artists in this poll having seen their videos on the chart show. Tiffany's song is sexier by miles though, I just liked the camera angle in the Carlisle video which looked down her top.

You say the run from rick astley, but surely the 4 before that were also ACE... PSB's only decent song, so-so Madge #1, wedding party anthem by Los Lobos, and quality King Of Pop track?

Agree though, what a great run of #1 singles! They don't make 'em like that any more.

I think Mr Graham's card has been marked since he declared a Supergrass track "the only good thing on this NOW"!

Because occasionally they make singles like Elevation and Beautiful Day (Er, assuming these were in the 00s)

I recently recieved their greatest hits as a present from [livejournal.com profile] dirtyvicar, and my impression is that I Owe You Nothing is the only one that would get people dancing as well as remembering. Also obv songs they wrote themselves = avoid like the plague.

I thought that's what this poll was! Or are other people somehow able to magically take the s3x out of pop when they vote?

haha, i remember the SCANDAL in smash hits when everyone realised JUST HOW ANCIENT belinda carlisle was in comparison to eg kylie/tiffany/debbie

however, kylie flouncing about on her bed tops both T and BC in my opinion...

PITY the poor indie kid of 1988-89 as the only pop star he could in all conscience fancy was WENDY JAMES.

(Who to be fair looked a good deal DIRTIER than Tiff or Kyles.)

As this was my first year of listening to the charts too, I have ticked EVERYTHING because I loved it all. Well, apart from Phil Collins, naturally.

Well I fancied her and all, but then I fancied any female in pop pretty much. Including unlikely candidates eg. Tanita Tikaram. This presumably had a lot to do with the onset of adolescence, but why hasn't it gone away?
