Top 40 Singles Of 2006 Pol #8: August

Ah September. The sun is back (Back! BACK!) in earnest and we can look ahead to the Autumn release schedule after a somewhat disappointing Summer in terms of chart-friendly bangers and anthems (sure threre's been a few but look at the leaderboard below and you'll notice the dearth so far). Anyway, time to review August's collection of top 40 hits:

The Young Folks clip gave me nightmares.

How come a lower percentage beats a higher one when votes are equal?

i thought it best to rank the song higher if there were more people voting in the poll overall...

altho i realised too late that it calculates vote share only by each individual chunk of songs...i think...could be wrong about all of this.

Heard what I think was songs from their LP in HMV the other day, and was keen to hear more/again.

Deacon Blue for the 00s blah blah, produced by T Horn blah blah. But only 'Broke' is any good i think. I am hoping to Braxe that track up when it comes to Ultramix 06.

oh THAT'S who it is. they are totally the new deacon blue (not in any way a bad thing).

there are lots of bridges i like in songs which don't really have a chorus e.g. Kraftwerk's 'The Model'. the 'bridge' is so distinctive there but it just leads to the bigger melodic hook - no vocal chorus as such.

"little things I should've said and done..." also sprang to mind but as we've discussed before...one of the most minimal 'choruses' ever there no?!

'Voulez-Vous' by Abba also popped up - an interesting bridge of sorts that one, again the shift in the song v distinct, and this time the chorus is more trad and a fitting pay-off.

that's made me think of 'Tainted Love's bridge in turn - a great one. and 'Don't You Want Me's is great too. 80s bridges rools pbs.

has the bridge died a death somewhat?

In "Sexyback", when the dude says "take it to the bridge", IT JUST GOES BACK TO THE VERSE AGAIN! Absolutely shocking disregard of song structure there.

- Alesha's comeback single = disappointing. Esp compared to Jamelia's new one
- same viz PSB
- the David Guetta vs Egg is the one from the car advert, Peugot I think - decent electro-bosh, sounds v French innit
- Shapeshifters & Chic could have been great but it fell somewhat flat so I didn't tick it
- I still love The Feeling! But this song is nowhere near as good as "Fill My Little World"
- Orson can go jump off a cliff

I am divided on the Alesha single. It certainly has...energy? It's not weak/insipid-style disappointing. If I pretend it's by Ashlee Simpson I really like it. Thus, just on the good side of Any Good At All.

Still not heard new Jamelia!

I like it enormously, personally.

Cassie! Minimal r&b! Cello grind on chorus = sound of the year.

R&B is "back" isn't it - two #1 records in two weeks.

Yes, the theme of the past month or so really has been the biggest names coming through. Has Kelis released her single yet? 'Bossy' is an odd choice of lead (esp considering what else is on the album) but it's much better than one thinks on first listen.

According to

skillextric over on the ILM UK charts thread, Kelis available to download this past week and missed the Top 40! So don't expect a particularly high placing for it next Sunday.

I really, really like that song but the rest of her album is a bit 'meh,' innit?

I love the album! Only got it on Sunday but 'Long Way 2 Go' is spoken word and AWESOME, and there is another song with a HARP on it. It's really succinct as r&b albums go, and on one listen I was pretty much into every song, even if I expected it to be less...inviting? It's overall quite warm, where 'Me & U' is glacial.

I get accused of this by somebody every month. Poptimists = 101x FOGEYS

I'm six months short of two decades and have still not heard most of this stuff. I blame Chris Moyles.

I can't decide if that Peter Paul & Mary (or whoever) thing is great or appalling. You can't beat a bit of whistling. And the track reminds me more than a bit of The Brady Bunch Kids, which is also good. (The bloke and the girl both sing in tune to about the same extent as The Brady Bunch did too.)

I've ticked it for now.

Just to clarify: do actually know what bridge as in construction to link two points which are in some way separated is, just have never worked out which bit of a song it is.

Can I just take this opportunity to say how utterly horrible it is hearing that David Guetta song and then realising some UTTER FOOL has put a load of wanky bits that sound like Liam Howlett having one of his 'I'm an artiste' moments on The Prodigy's last album all over it, thus rendering it properly crap and disappointing in comparison to its previous euphoric JOY. :(

Or alternatively hearing that amazing Egg track ruined by putting vocals over the top.
