The Historiography of Pop part 1 aka Then vs NOW.

While we prepare the amazing follow-up to the Now polls series (ahem), we will close the book on them with a series of pollfites to work out which of our 64 victors is actually the best.

A very simple format - just tick the song you like best in each question. Rather than do it randomly, or just 2 by 2, each fight is a winner from NOWs 1-32 against one from NOWs 33-64, giving us a chance to think about the ways pop has changed.

Due to LJ poll limitations we'll be doing this initial batch in three chunks.

[Poll #794482]

ROAR

The next 11 tomorrow.

(and yes I know I need to do the pop star poll too - the picture components in that make it less office-safe tho so I'll do it at home)

There are more 'classic' thens in this poll than nows - even I ticked more thens.

Although this poll is less thens v nows than thens v thens.

I feel so bad that 'My Humps' didn't get through, surely we can shuttle it through to the final by jiggerypokery.

Or maybe we can BRING IT BACK at the last minute like a BIG BROTHER EVICTEE!

MAN those were some hard choices! Esp

MARRS vs Oizo
Europe vs Stardust
Run vs Billie

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2006-08-14 12:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I was surprised at how easy I found most of them - the only one I hesitated over was Cyndi vs Spices. Everything else had a v obvious winner for me.

MARRS vs Oizo

This was a killer.

Horrid 'Final Countdown' beating amazing Stardust is 1x DISGRACE!

Songs you can whistle >>>>> songs you can't.

I can't whistle and HATE the sound of other people doing it!

You should hear the Bonde Do Role song which samples this! Then you'd love it!

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2006-08-14 03:09 pm (UTC)(link)
No, I've heard it, it's maybe even more ghastly because instead of just being awful it's making a great genre awful as well.

I really hate Bonde do Role, I think, they take the brilliant magpieing-over-Western-culture thing of baile funk and turn it into something completely crap.

More revisionism please!

[identity profile] braisedbywolves.livejournal.com 2006-08-14 12:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Fascination hasn't been the winner of NOW 1 (http://community.livejournal.com/poptimists/37651.html) for ages!

This has been pointed out several times. I suspect [livejournal.com profile] freakytigger of having hands over ears, singing "La la la I can't hear you".

Poor Gala :-(

You should all be ashamed of yourselves.

This is the point at which Tom reveals that due to a blip in space-time, we've been voting for a cover version by Gavin Rossdale's mob, which will win NOW #77 shortly before the infamous [livejournal.com profile] poptimists suicide pact.

Quite frankly Poptimists have done much much worse already. In fact it is entirely possible that we - YOU LOT NOT ME - have already PLUMBED THE DEPTHS.

Gala suffers by coming up against the legend that is K. Bush. What seems clear to me from this poll is that Poptimists love Kate Bush and hate the Chemical Brothers.

Incidentally, you know Placebo have started covering that particular Kate Bush song live? I saw them play it at Benicassim, but since no-one on YouTube seems to have the video, here's them doing it at Rock Am Ring (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u58X5Lb7qkM).

Billie vs Run DMC tussle is RIVETING.

I HAVE JUST BROKEN TEH DEADLOCK YAY ME!

Jyoti vs Giorgio was the toughest decision I've ever had to make in one of these. Not that it makes a jot of difference considering Giorgio is running away with it.

Some other fites that looked OVA at 2pm are now close again too :)

Pity about the continued overrating of PSBs by this community though.

The American vote has pummelled poor Billie into submission :(

What no one has mentioned is that Tom is 2X POP DAD for thinking Disco 2000 (11 years old and counting) is remotely "now".

I said way up there that it was more like thens v thens for me.

SUPERB comeback win for 'Time After Time'! Thank god Stardust squeaked through as well. Shocked that Gina G capitulated so easily, would've expected better from someone with her fighting qualities.

Bah, will no one put Pulp to the sword :(
