The History Of Pop Part 63 aka My lovely lady lumps

The penultimate Now poll finds us on very familiar ground - almost all these songs have been Poptimist-polled before by the diligent Steve M. To be frank I doubt you'll find much work for your ticking fingers here but we need to go through this one to 'complete the set' to let's be at it.

Sugababes won the Now 62 poll by a reasonable margin, despite being very few people's overall favourite. They're in it again this time.

[Poll #787404]

TICK AWAY

[identity profile] piratemoggy.livejournal.com 2006-08-07 12:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't believe I just ticked Coldplay and left Girls Aloud off. What has happened?

[identity profile] awesomewells.livejournal.com 2006-08-07 12:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Talk is the best Coldplay single. I ticked it.

I'm slightly astonished at how few of these I actually know! I must be more disconnected with pop than I thought.

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2006-08-07 12:36 pm (UTC)(link)
'Talk' is the one where they VOMIT ALL OVER KRAFTWERK - it's one of the few Coldplay singles which, instead of just being a blur of blah, is actively vile!

Meck is probably the best number one single since... "Babycakes"?

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2006-08-07 12:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Nonsense.

Never mind, Gorillaz to the rescue! Be careful what you wish for etc etc etc

I think we should make HUMPS the honorary winner, there must surely be a loophole which allows this.

Candi Staton

[identity profile] katstevens.livejournal.com 2006-08-07 01:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Is this release of The Source any different at all to the original? [I haven't ticked this because I haven't heard the version, despite loving the song]

[identity profile] nicolars.livejournal.com 2006-08-07 04:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't vote for reissues just on principle. I love that single but it's kind of depressing if it wins.

Reality TV dominates all

[identity profile] awesomewells.livejournal.com 2006-08-07 12:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Ordinary Boys.
Dead Or Alive.
Chico.
Shayne Ward.
Will Young.
Kelly Clarkson.
Liberty X.
Girls Aloud.
Probably at least one other.

Is this a record for the most reality TV-orientated songs on one Now!?

[identity profile] martinskidmore.livejournal.com 2006-08-07 12:25 pm (UTC)(link)
We're into the period where I have been reviewing singles for Stylus, so I'm surprised at how many I still don't know.

Woman In Love

[identity profile] mostlyconnect.livejournal.com 2006-08-07 12:35 pm (UTC)(link)
This is a really good single? The video is totally startling, her beau gets killed halfway through it (!!!) and she sings the rest in this incredible giant purple funeral dress, thousands and thousands of petals falling from the sky, her face this transfixed, pained, ecstatic expression?

Tiebreak

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2006-08-07 12:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Traditionally this is between two very good songs. Not this time! It is between one very dull song from an otherwise ace popstar, and a dreadful song from dreadful popstars. WVS.

Are you calling De La dreadful popstars! That's fighting talk.

Chico's new single.

If I'm ugly then SO ARE YOU

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2006-08-07 12:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I love how the Sugababes' idea of a self-empowerment anthem is one based around calling other people names.

It's lovely nonetheless, 'Unpretty' rewritten for...other people.

GIP.

Who's heard London Bridge, then? It's like Hollaback Girl but BETTER.

CHICO

[identity profile] katstevens.livejournal.com 2006-08-07 01:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I liked it! From its very first airing on X Factor no less. It's a really well put together song written by the same people who write for ROOSTER, oh yes...

Re: CHICO

[identity profile] chezghost.livejournal.com 2006-08-07 01:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Rooster are the worst band ever. If there is a worst band ROOST then it is they who rule it DYS.

No love for "No Worries" which transcends its vile elements to be something quite wonderful.

[identity profile] chezghost.livejournal.com 2006-08-07 01:57 pm (UTC)(link)
i love the female vocal bit.

the pop inside me has died

[identity profile] jauntyalan.livejournal.com 2006-08-07 01:46 pm (UTC)(link)

Anyone have a more shameful confession?

MVP

[identity profile] chezghost.livejournal.com 2006-08-07 03:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Why don't more people like the MVP track?

It gives a playful nod to 'I Like To Move It' (not as good as that, but still good).

I think I moaned about this on the Feb top 40 poll also. carry on...
