Because I was too busy to do a POPFITE yesterday you get FOUR clashes today, to finish off the first round. In previous fites JARVIS won a convincing victory over CHRIS LOWE, and MICK JAGGER won out against HANK WILLIAMS.

As for today's fights, words cannot do them justice (i.e. I am starving and need to upload this and go get a sammich).

Missy is way too "critically acclaimed" to be a pop star.

Also, Britney v Freddie = one of the toughest ones yet!

She looks like a pop star though!

I don't deny she is a pop star, but I think she would lose out to other pop stars who are more (for the want of a better word) vacuous, because their popness is such that it doesn't NEED critical acclaim etc!

What is poor Britney doing losing to terribel ghastly unlistenable Queen?!?!?!

This might be a better argument if she were against anyone other than MJ, whose Off The Wall is the only record that several amazonian tribes own.

I am abstaining from the last one because I genuinely cannot choose between them - very similar pros and cons...

What is poor Johnny doing losing to terrible ghastly unlistenable Kate Bush?

This smacks of Rockism!

I voted with my conscience - Freddie being dead and all - but I too am surprised to see her way behind Freddie while the King Of Pop is TIED with Missy Elliot. That is absolutely ridiculous.

How can you call someone who (successfully!) hides from the press during five to ten year breaks between albums a pop star?!? I mean, I love Kate and all, but...

I can't stand him. Never have. I like some of his records, but MJ as a popstar I've never got. There's always been something too creepy and weird about him. Missy has been a star since day one.

Those amazonian tribes are far more likely to own Dangerous or Bad than Off the Wall, my friend.

Like or Not Like is different from who is the better pop star. I'm not saying I prefer MJ, or that he's not creepy (now). But as a pop star, there is no comparison.

No no! Because the village elder heard in NME/Mojo/any-medium-of-the-last-30-years that Off The Wall was the album to get. So they saved their sticks and beads for that one.

Or to actually make my point clearly, like I should have at the start: I think there are few albums with such unaninimous and total cachet as OTW.

Serge vs. Neneh

Some of these fites are too difficult: I really have no personal experience of Gainsbourg (and I'm definitely older than a lot of people here). Neneh's profile is certainly higher than her career was long, but I still find it surprising that she's beating ANYONE.

I understand why he is but I just can't stand his music.

I think this is not as bad as the Ciara travesty! Loving the Killers more than Ciara is a very very very fundamental example of "not getting pop".

hardest choice for me too! in the end kate is way too indie.

By [livejournal.com profile] dubdobdee's laziness criteria: I can remember two Neneh Cherry songs (one of them FANTASTIC) and no Gainsbourg, so easy win.

I don't know how much more clear-cut it gets though. Ciara = a popstar singing pop. Killers = an indie band 'singing' indie.
