The history of pop part 60 aka Look at your watch girl

The controversial Now 60 brings us into 2005. Controversial? Apparently so as the official Now site DOES NOT LIST ITS DETAILS. Looking at the tracklist you might - well I might - say it's not a vintage comp, but there's enough chewy material here to provide some good comments box sport.

"Love Machine" was Girls Aloud's first winner after several near misses - it won by 11 ticks over its nearest Scissor-shaped rivals. And "Some Girls" beat "Hey Ya" in the play-offs for Now 58.

Good Lord, this is an absolute stinker.

I haven't knowingly heard it! Post one YSI and I will go back and give big ticky.

Verbalicious rocks. What a shame she's not done anything else chart-wise since. I've got another song of hers (New Kid) which is almost as good. Anyone know what's happening with her?

BLOOD WILL BE SPILT OVER THIS NOW!

Especially if Ciara is beaten by the Killers.

The Gwen single is rubbish, really.

how can you say the Gwen is rubbish??!

[identity profile] juror8.livejournal.com 2006-07-27 01:30 pm (UTC)(link)
"What You Waiting For?" is basically the same song as "Come Up And See Me (Make Me Smile)", right? Are there any other "I'm the star of this band guys" tracks out there?

[identity profile] chezghost.livejournal.com 2006-07-27 01:44 pm (UTC)(link)
funny that as i really dislike "Come Up And See Me (Make Me Smile)" but adore "What You Waiting For?"

[identity profile] miss-newham.livejournal.com 2006-07-27 01:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought Athlete were great up to this point, but nobody believes me when I say that now.

(though I'm still ticking it as they really pushed out the boat in depressingness.)

Honest Mistake

[identity profile] awesomewells.livejournal.com 2006-07-27 01:47 pm (UTC)(link)
If this had been by a sexually ambiguous synthpop duo from Leeds as opposed to an arse-numbingly overhyped NYC haircut indie band people would be hailing it's genius.

(I TICKED CIARA AND KYLIE AS WELL, OKAY?!!)

This was a classic "Shrinker" for me (as in opposite of a grower). Absolutely loved it on first listen, and then liked it less and less and less on each subsequent hearing, to the extent that now = no ticky from me. (See also: Addicted to Bass)

Where is all the Freefaller love?

Come on, they were better than The Noise Next Door, that has to count for something!

[identity profile] mippy.livejournal.com 2006-07-28 09:47 am (UTC)(link)
A pile of dead fish on a coconut shy would be better than The Noise Next Door, though.

PEOPLE WHO ARE NOT TICKING CIARA SHOULD BE PURGED

[identity profile] cis.livejournal.com 2006-07-27 03:15 pm (UTC)(link)
this isn't a being-the-lex-for-lulz thing: Goodies is a fucking amazing song and deserves a hell of a lot more respect than it is getting here. :((((((

oh i give up! does someone actually have a filter which fears the cursing or is this just habit?

I'll Stand By You

[identity profile] mostlyconnect.livejournal.com 2006-07-27 04:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't heard a record since that does what this does half as well; the way the secondhandness of the lyrics give shape and shock to the moment ("there's nothing I confess/ could make me love you less") they come out as shiningly true despite everything.

Re: I'll Stand By You

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2006-07-27 05:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I stand by you in this as well. One of the best things about the way they sing the lyrics is their relationship to the song as a standard: suddenly they're not famous popstars any more, they are girls in their bedrooms with dreams and aspirations and all that again, singing along to a song on the radio because they're feeling sad and it's their best friend right at that moment.

WHAT THE FUCK

WHAT THE FUCK WHAT THE FUCK WHAT THE FUCK WHAT THE FUCK

YOU SHOULD ALL BE SHOT AT DAWN

I have had to break my strict adherence to my interpretation of 'any good AT ALL' in order to untick a couple of songs that really should NOT be ahead of 'Goodies'.

Kylie

[identity profile] blue-russian.livejournal.com 2006-07-27 05:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Very few posts to be expected at this point: Gwen is the overwhelming pick as best, which I guess shouldn't surprise me, but I think this is actually one of Kylie's best ever songs, slight though it is in some ways.

Re: Kylie

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2006-07-27 05:19 pm (UTC)(link)
the Kylie song is best heard as the end-of-night song after a mad dance set - it's really beautiful and transcendent, and the lyrics, god, LET'S GET METAPHYSICAL anyone?
