The History Of Pop Part 59 aka Only turning into tigers when we gotta fight back

Now 59 - later 2004 - the Golden Age continues, or....? JoJo, Three Of A Kind, V, Khia, Eric Prydz - we may well not see their like again. On paper this looks set to have a clear winner - but who knows the secret paths down which anygoodatall science will lead us?

Now 58 ended in a DRAW! - and no, no untickings were involved. "Hey Ya" and "Some Girls" fight it out down at the bottom of this poll. Kelis was one vote behind, and Girls Aloud one vote behind that. Very close.

[Poll #776850]

MY NECK MY BACK (TICK IT)

Especially on the third part. I nearly ticked "I Like That" just because of the eye-gouging.

And the Milian! omg the Milian is suffering one of the worst injustices yet. this is, like, maybe her best single!!!

wrong sizzasizzaz ballad :(

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2006-07-24 01:10 pm (UTC)(link)
'Mary' is nice and pleasant and I ticked it. But a better choice of single would have been 'Return To Oz', the album closer, which is epic and tear-jerking and absolutely MASSIVE :(

"Mary" is probably my favourite SS single, although this may be because I once scored really easy points with an ex (named Mary) by just shoving it onto the end of a mixtape. Although considering the song's about apologising for giving somebody AIDS, it may not have been the best choice.

did you ever hear Freeform Five's 'Easy'?

Re: Ouch, ouch. Ouch.

[identity profile] chezghost.livejournal.com 2006-07-24 01:15 pm (UTC)(link)
i stand by my original verdict. 'Radio' is bloody awful in every way.

Re: Ouch, ouch. Ouch.

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2006-07-24 01:19 pm (UTC)(link)
NO. it is abysmal and makes me wince.

No redeeming features whatsoever. This is when I completely went off him.

Concur with all the above.

I like it! He is pretending to be Gary Numan or someone, which is much better than him pretending to be someone sensible.

Thunderbirds Are Go...

[identity profile] juror8.livejournal.com 2006-07-24 01:20 pm (UTC)(link)
is the only Busted single I could imagine still listening to in this day/age.

I'm not sure I know any other Busted singles but I know Thunderbirds Are GO better than I know my husband...

Are people ticking it just cos it's Kelis? It really is the worst single she's released: it's OK and I ticked it but better r&b by less 'name' artists is getting overlooked here!

Like (segue!) the Pirates/Shola Ama single which may be even more heart-breaking and tear-jerking than the already emotionally extreme Mario Winans original. Both of them convey desperation and resignation simultaneously, how they both already know that a misunderstanding has permanently soured what they had - they're singing the same tune but they're not listening to each other.

Yes, that Kelis single is lame and Andre 3000 needs to be erased.

That Bedingfield woman in full

[identity profile] the-roofdog.livejournal.com 2006-07-24 01:26 pm (UTC)(link)
'These Words' is a really good song, probably, but I can't stand that voice.

Re: That Bedingfield woman in full

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2006-07-24 01:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, it's very...strident. She actually has some of the worst breath control I have ever heard in a professional singer, she just bellows lines indiscriminately with scant regard for subtlety.

The production is really clunky too. I really am not sure why so many people loved it. I like it fine but there are FLAWS in the system.

V

Out of all the popsters I met during my time at Island, V were my favourites. They were Absolute Sweethearts.

PJ hyped this song but I never heard it.

Not enough love for DEEP DISH either.

[identity profile] chezghost.livejournal.com 2006-07-24 01:44 pm (UTC)(link)
i refuse to give 00s Deep Dish any credit - they are a shadow of their former 90s selves.

Oakie totally copied this for 'Faster Kill Pussycat' tho eh?

Can't Stand Me Now

[identity profile] awesomewells.livejournal.com 2006-07-24 01:38 pm (UTC)(link)
This isn't actually as bad as I remember it being, possibly due to subsequent atrocities released by both parties. I still couldn't bring myself to tick it despite giving it 6/10 in the Square Table.

"Pump It Up" by Danzel

[identity profile] juror8.livejournal.com 2006-07-24 01:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Has the makings of a good dumb euro-bdoosh-bdoosh record... and then the beat kicks in. Ick.

[identity profile] umlauts.livejournal.com 2006-07-24 02:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Everyone who didn't tick V should be banned. It's Xenomania with the most homoerotic boy band ever (even if the gay one turned out to be the one I least fancied) WHAT IS NOT TO LOVE.

Oh you're all as indie as Lex.

[identity profile] blue-russian.livejournal.com 2006-07-24 02:33 pm (UTC)(link)
They were a Xenomania band, too? I thought Brian Higgins had the Golden Touch?
