I went to London's first bassline night last night and had THE WICKEDEST TIME - Dexplicit's set was one of the best I've heard this year, when he dropped 'Heartbroken' the crowd went nuts, but the best moment for me was when he played a garage remix of Ciara's 'Like A Boy', then a garage remix of The Prodigy's 'No Good', and then looped back to 'Like A Boy', and then played them both at the same time, and I suddenly realised that THEY ARE THE SAME SONG! Like...melodically and thematically and everything, even the timbre of the vocals! Also for a song I and everyone dismissed as Fiddy-by-numbers, 'Ayo Technology' sure sounded anthemic when sped up a touch - plus, if it's so by numbers, how come everyone (inc me) knew EVERY WORD to sing along?
Faggatronix were also ace (can we talk, incidentally, about 'THE WAY I ARE'? And how it's quietly, unassumingly, become the most fucking ubiquitous song of the year? And also quietly one of my favourites? I have heard this song dropped into house, techno, grime, bassline, dancehall and pop sets, and it's been a TREAT each time; plus, personally, it's a staple of walk-home AND way-out ipod-listening. I can't even put my finger on why it's so special, even) and as well as 'The Way I Are' they played the point of this post (finally!) which is 'Nann Nigga', an OLD BANGER from MISS TRINA (well it's Trick Daddy's jam really but Trina's guest spot steals his and the entire world's thunder - I know it off by heart).
Trina's new single is also amazing - pas de video but I put the mp3 up on my own lj the other day and heartily recommend it.
May as well put something CURRENT up because the present is by definition better than the past*; here is 'Flex', the boy Dizz's new one, trust him to release the best summer jam on his album in the middle of the most vile cold snap ever.
*NB 'Flex' is not better than 'Nann Nigga' (but only because it lacks Trina, it is still very good).
