Ghana 2 JAPAN 4

A Ghanaian fightback stopped this game from being a humiliation, but make no mistake - Japan fully deserved their four goals here today and the outcome of this second-round match was never in doubt. [livejournal.com profile] cis' side stride into the quarter finals, where they will face the winner of France vs Spain - a mouthwatering pop prospect for the neutral.

Two goals to the good at half time, Japan added another brace after the break as their effervescent play crushed the Group E winners. True to gaffer [livejournal.com profile] julietk's word, Ghana improved as the match went on, and scored a face-saving goal in the 80th minute, adding a second consolation with a free kick seconds before time. By that time though their fans were leaving the stadium, disconsolate after seeing a strong side demolished by a Japan team seemingly keen to restore their place as tournament favourites. France and Spain beware!

Final Results
Ghana - 75 points

Brazil 1 CZECH REPUBLIC 2

Brazil's defense of its Pop World Cup crown is over tonight after they fell to a Czech Republic side most commentators had expected them to brush aside. As the recriminations begin in the beaches and favelas of Rio, rookie manager [livejournal.com profile] mostlyconnect is living the dream - and preparing to face Ukraine or Togo for a place in the semis.

"No, Nipper! Not the mixer!"

In truth Brazil looked to have earned at least a draw in a fiercely contested game, dominating much of the match with their physical play but unable to get the ball in the net until a headed goal shortly after half time earned them the lead. The match should have been over, but ten minutes from time the Czechs scrambled in an equaliser, and Brazil's frustration turned to agony in the 89th minute, as a soft free-kick led to a second Czech goal. Brazil pushed forward and went close in injury time but the Czechs held on for a victory which will surely rank as one of the shocks of the Pop World Cup.

The post-mortem may focus on Brazil's overconfidence, with under-fire boss [livejournal.com profile] thenipper apparently claiming in private that he expected a walkover. A Czech spokesman refused to comment on these claims, simply commenting that "there are no easy games at this level, and Brazil learned that today."

Final Result
Brazil - 79 points
Czech Republic - 81 points

Teaser for tomorrow's PWC clashes!

"The festival's name "Sich" harks back to a kind of training camp for Ukrainian Cossacks that was a feature of the late Middle Ages.

The idea is that Ukrainian rock musicians are defending the country's music and culture from Russian pop in the way that Cossacks once defended the Ukrainian steppe from the Ottoman Turks."
