OK lyrics are not truly the domain of the poptimist, but a post in ANOTHER PLACE made me consider the following:

The Associates "Party Fears Two" vs Pet Shop Boys "Left To My Own Devices"

... that ABBA's smashing Super Trouper was viciously removed from the Number 1 spot. Well not quite - but THINGS WERE PUT IN MOTION.

It took another week to get "Just Like Starting Over" subscribed to the shops. Only the brilliant xmo placing of granny-fave (the clue is in the song title) by "St Winifred's School Choir" managed to remove it after just one week! ahem, before the inevitable re-assault in quick succession of both the dreadful Imagine, and the follow up Woman. All the pain that Imagine can bring to the poptimists ear is nothing to the awful banality of Woman.

Coincidentally the following year is chock full of bloody marvellous number 1s.

A solid win for the Pet Shop Boys in the Now 7 poll, and a Now 8 poll posted a couple of hours early cos I have a meeting later on today. Venus by the 'Rama came a respectable second, three votes behind, and "The Lady In Red" met with predictable censure.

Now 8 has THREE (3!!) previous poll winners in contention, in what looks to me like a pretty strong line-up - AND NO UB40! It's goodbye Madness, hello Janet Jackson and Mel & Kim, and a brief cameo from Billy Bragg. I know what ought to win it, I don't know what will. If the final question leaves you too much choice, feel free to skip it and head for the comments box instead.

I can't read about it, burns the skin from your eyes )

Lassie

What's that Lassie? There's a yorkshire lad stuck down a well and you need me to bring a length of rope and a squeaky bone?

How we all laughed, but the trailer to the new all UK Lassie film features Glorious - Andreas Johnson [YSI link]

This was somewhat hated on by indie-ists (and some pop-ists) for being neither fish nor fowl. I think it's... GLORIOUS! ha ha ha. Corny pomp done well. Warning, i think my mp3 might be a bit shonky - may skip on some players

ps sorry for the flurry of poptimist postings today, i have an cold, and it's caused me to come over all enthusiastic.

To make up for posting things that don't require or deserve comments :-( how about AN LIST of songs whose title is, in isolation, the opposite of what it's used for in the song. The Pet Shop Boys do this in a very cheap way with the addition of "Not"/negatives:

it's just a boy or a girl, its not "The End of the World"
we were never "Being Boring"

(both from the same album, hmm)

First person to post the song written down on the back of my hand here gets double points.
