First of all - THE SEVENTIES

"Wildfire" as discussed yesterday, I had misremembered the song slightly, it's obvious from the beginning that she is AN GHOST and also I had hallucinated a chorus due to Wildfire's spooky powers, still though, VIVA DEAD PONIES as they say. Quite a sturdy dead pony if it's carrying them both off at the end, I am imagining some Thelwell-eseque plumper.

"Signs" by the Five Man Electrical Band - this is what all other 70s pop was like, pseudo-hippie nonsense about how there are SIGNS everywhere put up by the MAN telling the KIDS what to DO. Should be revived by One Arctic Monkeys.

And now - THE NOT-SEVENTIES

tATU - "Robot", a great pop tune from the Russian version of their first album, it goes "Robot robot robot robot" over some frankly boshin' beats.

URBAN DEBUSSY BEAT - this is "Be Happy" by Mary J Blige.

Special Bonus Track: this was the final song we played at the last Poptimism. If you were there you'll know what it is. If you weren't there then prepare to be moved.

1. BIOLOGY, the grills aloud song actually sounded a bit wierd at high volume (and high alcohol consumption) at poptimism on friday. the dunk-de-dunky piano bits don't seem to go away and thus it feels a bit slow and not great for dancing to (side note, i think there were 4 (four) GA songs played on friday (wake me up, love machine and biology twice), is this a record?)

2. CHEMISTRY is the name of the album sa popjustice, will PHYSICS be the DVD?

3. bloody hell, nicola roberts there, enough to make a grown man somewhat weak in the knee area...

OK a 'rockist' sez:
Bob Dylan is better than Charlotte Church. That's just a fact.

A 'popist' sez:

No way, boring Bob is rubbish compared to Charlotte Church. That's just a fact.

Here's what I actually think:

Listening to music is made up of a series of moments, like coin tosses or dice throws. At any given moment I might find Bob suits me better, or Charlotte. Over time, it's likely Bob will win a lot more often than Charlotte. But during those moments when I want Charlotte, no amount of Bob will suffice. The 'rockist' or 'rockist-about-pop' mistake is to imagine that the 'over time' is what matters, not the moment.

(For 'Bob' and 'Charlotte' insert whoever you want.)

This third point of view is, you'll notice, considerably less snappy than the other two.

So re-reading this I wonder if it's statin' the bleedin' obvious or if there's anything in it, I mean in terms of the conception of the fixity of taste and judgement being a big divider....
