BBC Talking Point vs Eurovision
May. 22nd, 2006 04:18 pmLordi, Lordi, Lordi. What an act. A proper band playng proper instruments.
And kudos the the Germans. Country and Western.
The rest were just sining to backing tracks and classical session musicians.
The first time I have 'watched' the show for about 15 years all thanks to Lordi.

Date: 2006-05-22 03:27 pm (UTC)Finland, Germany and Latvia (who are excluded from his crtiticism by dint of fact) were my 3 favourites too though.

Date: 2006-05-22 03:54 pm (UTC)I was shocked by the press reports saying "Oh normally it is pop that wins the Eurovision but not this year" - how dense do you have to be to not recognise Lordi as pop?

Date: 2006-05-22 04:13 pm (UTC)Similarly there seems to be a "...but at what cost!" backlash of sorts in Finland which has been entering my-love-the-reindeer ballads for 1000 years to no effect.

Date: 2006-05-22 06:57 pm (UTC)I'm not sure I approve of Silvia Night either. It seems to me she's just taking advantage of the language barrier to wind up the Greek media. And for what end? Take it somewhere that actually deserves it - like that orgy of self-importance the Grammys for example. Not a contest that is all about celebrating our (Europe's) common love of pop.
I exempt Lordi from this, because "Hard Rock Hallelujah" is a fantastic pop song, regardless of the fact that it was original put forward as a form of protest. Deserved winner.

Date: 2006-05-22 07:09 pm (UTC)If the price of a Eurovision which includes pop-metal, pop-country, pop-hip-hop, weird a capella tracks as well as a hefty helping of trad europop, balladry, ethnobeat etc. is that we get the occasional sneerer sneaking in, that's not too bad a price to pay.
(I thought this year the trad europop in particular was very weak - some good tunes but rotten vocalists by and large)

Date: 2006-05-23 10:04 am (UTC)I will confess to being whay mike t-diva calls a 'Eurovision purist'. Here's the last of his recent Slate pieces on the contest. (http://www.slate.com/id/2141944/entry/2142205/) Note the last bit, where he reports on the possibility of the contest "going global". Eek.
