The Wednesday Canon: New Order/Joy Division

Much demanded in the write-in votes last week, this - here are the UK hit singles of New Order (Blue Monday remixes have been compressed for purposes of voting, and Joy Div's two hits have been flung in to add choice. I thought of putting in Electronic too, but then I really ought to have included Monaco, and we know where THAT leads.

You get NINE picks across the 27 choices, I can guess where the bulk of them are going to lie but the ordering should be of some intrigue.

(Edit: And "Bizarre Love Triangle" wasn't a hit, amazingly since it's probably the best thing they've ever done)

[Poll #712924]

MEANWHILE the Girls Aloud Canon stands as follows. 1 - No Good Advice. 2 - Biology. 3. The Show. 4. Wuv Machine. 5. Sound Of The Underground. Hurrah for the gurls! And yes I will be doing the unbelievably huge Madonna poll before too long.

Was Bizarre Love Triangle really not a hit?

If memory serves, Run2 was whipped from record shop shelves pretty quickly due to an impending law suit from John Denver... Either that or it was just a limited run anyway. Regardless, it has a music video and The Chart Show played it.

How is it that the three NO songs I have heard count among my favouritest songs EVER - but I haven't heard any others! I'm shocked at myself. Are the others like 'True Faith' and 'Regret'? What album should I get?

[identity profile] damnspynovels.livejournal.com 2006-04-19 01:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I prescribe Substance 1987.

we can't stil be surprised by what alex doesn't know, can we?

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2006-04-19 01:25 pm (UTC)(link)
No I know 'Blue Monday', I DJed a mash-up of it with 'Stand Up Tall' two days ago! It is really different to 'Regret' and 'True Faith' so I assumed it was a one-off?

I have a sneaking suspicion that I own Technique but that it got buried in eone of my house moves.

If ever a worth of a band (or two bands even) was ill-served by a list of their hits, it's this lot.

Lex you will probably enjoy the Substance compilation, if that's still in print. Power, Corruption and Lies is also worth having.

I think the reason I don't own any NO is that I keep looking for an album/compilation with both 'True Faith' and 'Regret' on it but can never find one. I will keep Substance in mind though.

New Order Botherd. I've heard Blue Monday so many times that it's losing its interest for me (although it is still obv a good song). Barney's voice really grates on me as does his lyrics. Apart from Temptation. I like the lyrics on that one quite a lot.

temptation will NEVER grow old it just DOES ME IN every time i am dancing to it. this is the song they should be known for more than BLue Monday - which is still GREAT and ICONic and stuff but it's just falls a little flat/dull on my ears (yes from over playing i guess) from time to time, lacking the energy that Temptation keeps on giving back

this was very hard 9 tracks. i had to sacrifice WOrldINMotion and BlueMonday :-(

[identity profile] carsmilesteve.livejournal.com 2006-04-19 03:01 pm (UTC)(link)
well i only picked 7, so you can have two of mine if you want.

Am pleased that "True Faith" beats "Blue Maundering." "True Faith" never touches me as much as JD's "She's Lost Control," however.

Some Of The Guitars Sound Like Pink Floyd Spice

Am depressed that "Blue Monkey" has now forged ahead of "True Faith."

Note for interested parties e.g. The Lex: the double-CD Singles comp was on sale in Tesco (at least in the Seven Sisters branch) today for £4.96 (who makes up these prices?).

I have voted for the only 8 tracks I have knowingly heard:

Love Will Tear Us Apart
Temptation
Blue Monday
True Faith
World In Motion
Regret
Crystal
Krafty

Is there one I'm likely to have unknowingly heard?

I think now is as good a time as ever to come out and say that "Run" is my favourite song ever. Technique probably my favourite album too, come to think of it.

Random trivia:
-I used to have quite a Barney fixation back in the mid-'80s. Used to want to copy his haircut, but I never dared to have it cut quite that short.

-I once played Substance (1977-1980, the JD one) to some friends of mine, and when "Atmosphere" came on they asked if it wasn't perhaps playing at the wrong speed..? Pillocks.
(I may have had guilty fun later on playing the album at 45rpm, but i'll deny this if you ever confront me with it)

'Blue Monday' is my favourite song of all time, proven by science (I never get tired of hearing or dancing to it or it's countless remixes).

I like 'Spooky'.
