1993 and yes it's the SUMMER OF RAGGA, all 3 hits of it. During the early 90s every summer was going to be the Summer Of Ragga but this one actually WAS, sort of. What happened to them all? Snow turned into an N@zi! Shaggy hooked up with Rayvon! Shabba said bad things and was DISSED on The Word by a rockabilly revivalist! And meanwhile the rest of the charts were turned over to proving the proposition that anybody can rap - Brian Harvey, the crusty bloke from Stereo MCs, him out of Capella, you name it they tried it.

The dog that isn't really barking in these polls is Grunge, which was a presence in the charts but whose practitioners didn't seem to want it on Now comps (or the compilers considered it too horse-scaring).

Meanwhile on Now 23 East 17's "House Of Love" topped the poll by one vote, ahead of ABBA, with Eezer Goode in third.

1) I do like that L. Kravitz song but I wanted to tick My Humps!

2) CD1 = best cd out of all Nows so far.

3) I used to have the Sunscreem song on Energy Rush Presents Dance Hits '93 but I lost the tape somewhere in the Canadian Rockies. It had Sub Sub on it as well. I mourned that tape much longer than I mourned [livejournal.com profile] graciousviv's high top black Reeboks that I mislaid in Vancouver.

Has there ever been a more calamitous butterfly-into-slug pop transformation than that of Sub Sub into Doves?

Good point. Perhaps there was a comedy moustache revival we've all forgotten about.

In the intervening 12 years, I had completely forgotten that Dina Carroll ever existed. Probably for the best I guess.

I haf this problem that practically everything I remember from this period I love, I don't know whether it's mad nostalgia or I just mental-blocked-out the tripe. So this isn't serving to remind me of how great all that 92/3 dance was, o no, it's reminding me how much I loved Ugly Kid Joe! seriously, that almost beat 'no limits' on best track for me.

There are about 10 Doves tracks I like more than this Sub Sub one.

Half of these are instrumentals mind you.

Sub Sub's Balearic ambient stuff is alright too, if you like that sort of thing.

Good thing Stone Temple Pilots are not on this NOW is all I can say...

As with the prev NOW!, I only own two of these: Stereo MCs and Sunscreem (unless I have "No Limits" on a comp, which is v. possible - I'm glad that's winning anyway).

Answer to bonus question = "Blue Monday" (that's showing my age)

Top 5 Butcher Knife Tracks

Top 5 Butcher Knife Tracks*:

1. "We Are Family (Sure Is Pure Remix Edit With a Butcher Knife)"
2. "Looking Through Patient Eyes With a Butcher Knife"
3. "This Time With a Butcher Knife"
4. "Aint No Love (Aint No Use) With a Butcher Knife"
5. "I Put a Spell On You With a Butcher Knife"

*When it was first released, Chuck Eddy insisted that "Constant Craving" should have been entitled "Constant Carving" anyway and that therefore it for sure belonged in the Top 5. Judges on all levels, however, dismissed this reasoning.

Bonus Q:

Linda Ronstadt "Heatwave"

(They called them "mixers" not "discos" and I never went, so the above is a guess, but as I recall, everyone at college had terrible taste but me, so it wouldn't have been "I Wanna Dance Wit' You (Do Dat Dance)" or anything else I liked.)

Tony Thompson, one of my three favourite drummers ever, went from Chic, when they stopped, to Power Station. That seems a comparable decline to me.
