Songs of 2006: Heat #6

We are at the final proper heat of 2006; there'll be some mathematical mop-up at the end but this is pretty much the final curtain. As it's a short heat (36 rather than 40 contenders) you only get FIVE ticks. Which is a shame, as the end of the alphabet is looking great- like all good compilations it's got a dodgy indie collection at the end but there's some ruddy great hits before then.

Through from the last round were the following-

The winner in the Heat 4 playoff was Amy Winehouse and her Rehabs. Amy will no doubt be very pleased about this victory and if you pop along to the right place in Camden you can probably join her in celebrating.

Kelly's Walk Away is stonkingly great in a 'singing into your breakfast cereal' way. I have the feeling that, appropriately, they include this in the video but can't watch it at work to verify this fact-

This heat seems designed to cause me great distress. I DIDN'T EVEN TICK WAMP WAMP.

But the absolute must-tick for me is The Pack's Vans:

Worth it to tick Fergie's Voodoo Doll though - I put this on a mixtape for

martinv without telling him who it was by and he thought it was brilliant:

Fergie is like that - I encountered Clumsy under similar circumstances and I basically guessed 50% of the female population of the world before finding out it was Fergie :)

The whole album is amazing. Even the blanket song. OK, maybe not 'Mary Jane Shoes' (which sucks mightly in the way only drippy cod-reggae can) or 'Finally' (album-closing piano ballad where Ferg just goes off on one to no great result).

e.g. on 'the makeup song' (or whatever it's called) we have the genius lines:

"Would! You! Love me if IIIII didn't work out, or I didn't change my natural hair..." <--- you mean that's NOT your natural hair Ferg?

"But when I look into your eyes I'm not scared to say, I see little YOUs, I'm in the picture too" <-- most terrifyingly honest chatup line ever and precursor to TashBed's (upcoming in 2007) "I Wanna Have Yr Babies"

Oh THAT. I will have to relisten to that tonight and possibly amend my indieticks as I remember it being great. I never learn, though...

This whole album has v happy memories tied up in it for me.

This currently needs more ticks. Probably the best thing in the whole of 2006 voting, I reckon.

Another favorite from this year. Kind of an "ambushed by emotion" song for me, though not as much as "Robot Song" from last heat.

Had to jettison either Kelly C.'s "Walk Away" or T.I.'s "What You Know." The Latter's too damn iconic to get rid of, but I'll come back to Kelly if it's close.

I actually prefer this to Don't Save Me: a lovely sun-dappled wander through perfect love, which nearly immediately steps off a cliff. On the way down, dark wings unfurl...

(I know that it's problematic to mix "quirky indie princess" with "mental health issues" - I don't really have anything to say to that except fucking hell, this is an amazing song)

Actually, this is the first time I've heard this, and I don't yet know what I think. Is sweet mush and a slow embrace between G-Dragon and Bom until 1:55, when T.O.P. takes over for 40 seconds, excellently pouring dead cinders on everything, Bom being relegated to the backseat (though I doubt that that's what the lyrics say is going on). Tension from thereon as to where G-Dragon's loyalties really lie, or so it seems from the vid.

I really like Big Bang in this smooth, commercial rnb mode, one big charismatic grin - more than the shiny, aloft, guitar-infused mode they operate in as a group recently.

Sweet pleading emotion turned up to high pitch, Spandau Ballet's slow glacier of beauty as backdrop ('cept does anyone think that Lloyd, when he goes, "She's fine, too, but I want you," really thinks he can't have both?).

Made a mistake in not ticking this.

The problem with Promise may be less carpet than doormat, in fairness.

B0LL0CKS I've just realised I forgot to nominate 'Off The Hook' by CSS for this year. Can we do it next year pretty please Mog? I know 'Lets Make Love & Listen etc' charted in 2007 but 'Off The Hook' did not wah :(

Awesomely OTT christian R&B - Yolanda absolutely belts out every line like her life depends on it, while a gospel choir shreaks away behind her, and all backed up by amazing VWORP-VWORPing synths.
