Best of 2006: Heat #2

Time for ANOTHER HEAT. Yes I am being a bit slow about this, sorry; work has got very busy suddenly just when I thought their backs were turned.

Through from the last heat are Christina Aguilera with Aint No Other Man on 12 tix, Gnarls Barkley with Crazy on 10, Kelis ft. Too $hort with Bossy and Lil Chris with Checkin It Out both on 8, Ashlee Simpson with Boyfriend on 7 and the Pussycat Dolls/Snoop Dogg with Buttonz on 6. Now, onwards into D-I!

The Scissor Sisters was the one that caused some consternation among record-spinners of my acquaintance when it became clear that while it was objectively no good, it could still fill a floor quite easily :)

I may yet bung in my Strokes tick for the operatic goonery of Dick Around but it's unfortunately conflated with an ex-boyfriend in my head, since I last heard it in 2006, so I think I need to give it a less biased listen when I get home. Even so, Heart In A Cage is quite a Stooges-type stormer, all croony lust and kinesis.

Gettin' Enough is so Buzzcocks-derived it feels like a cheap hit but then again it is also BRILLIANT. It's not quite up with Checkin' It Out for sexy (YES I KNOW LIL CHRIS IS ABOUT FOURTEEN -I'm talking about the music not him) bouncy punky lust but it's a damned good offering in that vein and well, I'll take that.

I Don't Need A Man is the #1 song about w4nking.

Didn't get to rep my choices for previous heat so I'd thought I'd get in nice and early.

Sparks! They troubled the charts in the 70s but their recent work is even better, funnier and more grandiose.

This is definitely worth a listen for anyone who hasn't heard it- ineffective boredom turned into dynamically explosive hysterical heartbreak, with epic-scale turned-up-to-eleven, grandiose intonations that ALL I DO NOW IS DICK AROUND, DICK AROUND.

I think I prefer the breakneck runaway politics train of (Baby, baby) Can I Invade Your Country but I inconsiderately didn't bother to nominate that so I've only myself to blame.

I admire the meta-consistency that it is a 4 minute track, for 70% of which all they are actually doing is dicking around. However I can't escape my impression that it feels like a 15 minute track, for 70% of which etc etc.

I have the feeling that there is indeed an extremely extended live version somewhere from my dim memories of my ex playing it 3489768574698 times a week. It's VERY METAL live, of which I obviously approve.

whatever happened to her? One moment she was going to be as big as M.I.A. then she disappears. But this is still sounds as massive as the first time i heard it.

Wow, I totally forgot about "Girl Fight"!! Blogged about her back in 2006 once and then promptly lost track of her.

Man, I totally forgot about this. Feels more like bumper cars than baile funk, but does the job.

Can't do enough stumping for "Don't Save Me" in this heat. It may be one of the highest-rated songs in the Singles Jukebox history at the time (the old version, anyway).

Can't believe I've never seen the video for this before!

I would have literally no tick left for anything else if I didn't have the extra one, DEAR GOD.

Too damn many to start writing anything lengthy about, so just take my word for it that they are ALL AWESOME.

Amazingly beautiful melody, and those strings! Prob my favourite Jamelia track.

There's an incredibly delicate touch to the production, that somehow comes over deeply wistful. Never fails to tear at my heart.

ALL TIME FAVOURITE MINIMAL TRACK. Dear god this thing is so stunning.

Speaking of bangers! (Should probably have nommed Tell Me When To Go, all things considered, but I think this one is even better, SO THIS ONE IT WAS.) I love that whole album intensely, really.

MASSIVE OVERINVESTMENT ALERT: this one gets its own separate post, because it is one part of my three-way tie for TUNE OF THE F'N DECADE. (Another of those three is, not incidentally, also up this year.)

When those chiming notes drop, it's like the entire frigging universe opening up inside my head. I think the word EPIC is probably allowable, here.

A lovely little puffball in the wind. "Time After Time," which is wonderful, sounds like a mudslide in comparison.

(2006 may have been Scott Storch's greatest year to date. Kicking myself for forgetting to nominate JoJo's "This Time.")

2006 also saw Xtina's lowest point with her embarrassing Scott Storch diss song.

And I don't know yet what I think of "Forever With You," which I'm just hearing for the first time; may not be up to later glories from 2NE1 and GD&TOP; but T.O.P., the deep-voiced one, has an excellently chilling voice, ashes sliding over his larynx, while Bom rides smoothly above in r&b sadness.
