Pop World Cup: Half*-Time Report

Hosts Germany have found Group A anything but a walkover and are not even assured of qualification with strong challenges from unfancied Ecuador and highly-fancied Poland (ahem). Minnows Costa Rica are mathematically still in it but will be looking for a massive performance in the second half of the group stage in order to save themselves from the bottom spot.

Keep those entries coming. There's a link on the Poptimists info page to the game in case you want to vote later and can't be both'd to trawl through the usual nonsense.

*yes, one 'half' lasts a day and the other lasts five days. WHAT OF IT?

ha-ha-half

I seem to remember that when we were at school a 'half' could last anything from 10-14 weeks, and that the ironically named 'short half' was the longest. Or is my creaky old memory failing yet again?

bad pun

Pole-land (at least for many young men in the audience?)

I *told* you to enter SCOOTER!

It'll be interesting to see whether the HT scores affect tactical play in the second half - if I know that Costa Rica are more or less out of it, do I choose to give points to whichever two of the three others I prefer? I don't say this as a bad thing - imagine HT in the last group game: some team being 3-0 up/down might change what the other teams need to qualify, so this is apt, as well as interesting.

I acknowledge that it's too late for this suggestion, but it might have been an idea to allow substitutions after the half time score, in case EG starry-eyed Costa Rica have been pacing themselves for the final, and entered their fourth best tune.

i imagine there is some clever way i can work out what team iran may possibly play after it has gloriously stuffed and pwned in the so-called "group of death" which i call the "group of iran's imminent and inevitable VICTORY" esp.havin taken a gandah at the AWESOME LINE-UP

Winner in group D plays runner-up in group C; runner-up in D plays winner in C.

*hurried resumes search for the iranian focus*

Are those two statements supposed to be in the same post?

And have the little Costa Rican death metallers *cry bitter tears of sorrow* for coming so far last? Could you be so cruel?

[identity profile] marnameow.livejournal.com 2006-01-19 11:41 am (UTC)(link)
Without drumming up support on the defh metall! communities (and I think that might be not playing by the rules, somehow) I cannot see how our performance can pick up all that much.

An invasion of death metal fans would be a bit smelly. Every time I have been in a place with a lot of death metal fans it has been a bit smelly.

I might go and point my journal readers at this, though. Although none of them like death metal.

Can I tell people about the PWC on Myspace?

[identity profile] martinskidmore.livejournal.com 2006-01-19 02:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, I didn't intend to (mis)represent you so much as offer an example that wasn't far from what we had before us. I wonder if anyone will consider that winning is more important than joining in the fun in the spirit in which it is intended (these two things don't have to be incompatible, of course).

No one likes a winner.

The only thing I want to win is Trig Brother, and the heart of some pretty maiden.
