A New Decade In Pop: Week #22

We return from a relaxing Bank Holiday weekend to find four new entries in the top 10, including yet another #1 for Dizzee (who is clearly our best shot at a Eurovision win?).

[Poll #1572781]

What's that coming over the hill is it the World Cup, is it the World Cup: 'World In Motion' is at #98. IT BEGINS.

I was a lot more in tune with the Euroconsensus this year. Tipped UK to come last, voted Romania (came 3rd) and picked out 9 finalists as "any good at all" or better, including 5 of the eventual top 6.

Dizzee Rascal "Dirtee Disco": After rising to the top with several messes last year, Dizzee's suddenly gotten the pop right, "Dirtee Cash" then the Florence mashup and now this disco party with kid kazoos. TICK.

Iyaz "Solo": Previously, Rotem's sugared-up hooks for DeRulo and Iyaz and Kingston were actual hooks, no matter how enervated the arrangement. Whereas this is possibly the blandest song ever to chart. In the U.S., where this stuff is an automatic top ten, it couldn't even get into the top thirty. What's wrong with the U.K.? NO TICK.

Eminem "Not Afraid": Not alive. NO TICK.

N-Dubz vs Bodyrox "We Dance On": Another hookless wonder. Don't know what this is doing in the charts either. Can't anyone tell the difference? NO TICK.

K'naan "Wavin' Flag": Nice hook, but K'naan loses himself in it too much, locks himself into a rhythm. I'd put this in the bottom fifth of his generally very good album. BORDERLINE NONTICK.

Danielle Hope "Over The Rainbow": She overenunciates the words, 'cause that's what they teach showgirls in training these days, but I do like how she sings this for its "rainbow" rather than for the "why can't I." BORDERLINE NONTICK.

Keri Hilson "I Like": An overlooked bonus track from late last year, don't have a clue why this should hit now. But it's absolutely the best thing Keri's ever sung for herself, her glides and drifts at the start being haunting rather than chilly, and then her voice gets caught up in the instrumental emotion. I'm losing control and I feel it's right, I TICK I TICK I TICK.

Glee Cast "I Dreamed A Dream": This song isn't much better than mediocre, and Menzel's showbiz chops are pretty enough but give it utterly no character; Michele, in contrast, grips it like it matters, and would have taken this to tickland had she had it all to herself. BORDERLINE NONTICK.

Lady GaGa "Alejandro": Great hooks and antecedents, wonderfully hammy accent, and even though the parts stumble into each other, and there's no real payoff, this does earworm me with its beauty. TICK.
