Best Song of 2005: Heat #1

Oh my gosh! The days are getting longer - there's no turning back, I'm voting 2005!

  • You get SIX TICKS over the three bits of the poll, unless you told us all your new favourite (and why) from the last heat. Put your new favourite in the box below and get an extra tick for the next heat - do it for five or more heats and get an extra nomination for 2006 (unless I think of something else to do in 2006).

  • The top five in each heat will go through to the next stage. Make sure you rep for your faves in the comments!

  • If you want to fill in the 'best song I only heard today' box later, change your vote (or tick too many by mistake), you can edit your votes by clicking on 'Poll #12345' then 'Fill Out Poll'.

  • You have until Friday lunchtime to vote.

[Poll #1526211]

Extra ticks this heat go to [livejournal.com profile] skyecaptain, [livejournal.com profile] koganbot and [livejournal.com profile] credoimprobus.

I'm not so sure about that. It's struggling on 18% early doors.

Lots of huge tunes in that first group though, mostly the ones that have titles which are, or start with, numbers.

I dropped that one as well - as soon as I ticked the first three, I knew this was going to take some doing to keep to 6.

Couldn't tick even if it needed it, which it does, as I used up all ticks and couldn't even tick faves by Britney, Toby, Lady Sov, Crazy Frog, t.A.T.u., Kentucky Headhunters, and the Fall. Don't know what I'm going to do if I love some of what I've never heard.

Missy's rap at 2:12 in "1 2 Step" is a tribute to Teena Marie's amazing "Square Biz" (listen at 3:48).

Fannypack is hilarious. "Face looks like you did a hundred-yard dash in a 90-yard gym." Mournful harmonica sets stage for least mournful rap in history.

And please listen to "Before He Cheats," y'all.

There's an artist called Fannypack?!

[identity profile] jeff-worrell.livejournal.com 2010-02-16 03:01 pm (UTC)(link)
...and this is possibly their finest moment. Twas apparently used in the movie "I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry", whatever that was.

It's surely been played at Poptimism more than once....?

'Apply Some Pressure' is one of the best Singstar songs ever.

Would love to hear the Fallsies do a monotone version of this.

It's my favourite Sugababes non-single, which is why I nominated it.

one of my favourite JLC things is his remix of 'Avalon', just an enhanced version of the original with a few extra synthy bits really

the greatest diva video of all time

[identity profile] redcommieapples.livejournal.com 2010-02-16 01:52 pm (UTC)(link)
according to VH1, that is.

I remember this song made me reconsider the whole genre of country music, which I had previously rather ignorantly written off. This song is so fierce -
“I dug my key into the side of his pretty little souped up 4 wheel drive / carved my name into his leather seat /
I took a Louisville slugger to both headlights /
Slashed a hole in all 4 tyres /
Maybe next time he’ll think before he cheats.”

In fact, I could've just quoted the whole song, as it's so quotable. But what makes it so great is that Carrie herself hams it up with a little guttural affectation. Few things are as bitter, funny, and endlessly entertaining as a wronged psycho country girl.

"All you need for a movie country music video is a girl and glass that smashes."

Another of my nominations, maybe my favourite country song of the last several years, for much the reasons you mention.

I'd say yes, both to the idea and including "Hotel Yorba" - but then, I'm the guy who voted David Banner's "Cadillac On 22's" number one in my Country Critics ballot for the Nashville Scene in 2003.

You should also run your list by me and Xhuxk and Dave and Greg and Martin to see if you missed any that should count country. (E.g., I also placed a couple Bubba Sparxxx on my '03 ballot. You can always asterisk the more questionable calls.)

Yorba as country....hmmm....

Both The Veronicas' masterpieces should get through here: 4Ever is similar to, but better than Since U Been Gone and t.A.T.u's "All About Us" is also penned by the aussie girls (BUT -- it works as well as it does because of the russians' delivery of IF. THEY. HURT. YOU. THEY. HURT. ME. TOO.)

Max 'n' Luke and great high harmonies. Hard finding a version of an official vid that isn't sped up or the clumsy 2009 remake. Here's a good one but it's not embeddable.

AAAGH

I h8 this Tiesto track. Didn't William Orbit also massacre Barber's Adagio, in more or less identical fashion?

Shooter Jennings "4th Of July":

Country scion who's a friend of Axl's rides the Jack & Diane highway.

ain't in any of his categories

Shit what a monster heat. But I have to slide in a surely-doomed plug for THe Pipettes here:

So as with much of the Pipettes' stuff it's a kiss-off to an unsatisfactory man delivered as a 60s girl group pastiche (complete with lovely lovely harmonies) and so I love it for those reasons alone but the reason I nominated this specifically is that it's one of those instances where I actually identify with a song, although in this case not with the singer but with the subject of the lyrics.

"he's kinda tall and kinda shy
he's always asking me why"

The character of "ABC" is totally me, in short, and it speaks to many of my own difficulties that I have in relationships. It's kind of a succinct a distillate of what Asperger's syndrome is as I've seen, in fact, and there's a surgeon's precision behind the woah-uh-oh exterior of the Pipettes stuff , a cold exactitude.

also it is just two minutes long

[identity profile] skyecaptain.livejournal.com 2010-02-16 06:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Holy jeez this one's tough. I reluctantly swapped my Amerie tick (she seems to be doing fine) for Carrie Underwood, whom I'd reluctantly swapped for Amerie. And now I'm thinking it's wrong not to tick "Biology," but that one doesn't need the help either.

The full extent of my rah-rahing is going to go for "4ever" this heat.

ah yes, the 'lost' follow up single to "All About Us". I think that's in heat #2 though.

Spotify'd!

http://open.spotify.com/user/meserach/playlist/6Zrv6UUSLtIB2GxX2w6dQm

Pretty full turn out - only three missing! They didn;t have The Fall, Paleface or the Toby Keith (they never have the Toby Keith stuff, only cover versions).

Hey Kat, I just realised that this means all the Chemistry-era stuff by Girls Aloud shoulda been nminated this year! Shit! Did anyone nominate "Mdoels" or "Racey Lacey"? If not, could I do so retoractively? :(

Re: Spotify'd!

[identity profile] meserach.livejournal.com 2010-02-19 07:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Aww, biscuits. :(

Ah well, good though they are they'd never have won single of the decade.

I'm planning on doing an extra poll for stuff we missed nominating at some point, also, so I'll just include them in that.

ALERT ALERT ALERT
