Oh my gosh! The days are getting longer - there's no turning back, I'm voting 2005!

I'm not so sure about that. It's struggling on 18% early doors.

Lots of huge tunes in that first group though, mostly the ones that have titles which are, or start with, numbers.

I dropped that one as well - as soon as I ticked the first three, I knew this was going to take some doing to keep to 6.

Couldn't tick even if it needed it, which it does, as I used up all ticks and couldn't even tick faves by Britney, Toby, Lady Sov, Crazy Frog, t.A.T.u., Kentucky Headhunters, and the Fall. Don't know what I'm going to do if I love some of what I've never heard.

Missy's rap at 2:12 in "1 2 Step" is a tribute to Teena Marie's amazing "Square Biz" (listen at 3:48).

Fannypack is hilarious. "Face looks like you did a hundred-yard dash in a 90-yard gym." Mournful harmonica sets stage for least mournful rap in history.

And please listen to "Before He Cheats," y'all.

...and this is possibly their finest moment. Twas apparently used in the movie "I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry", whatever that was.

I'd not really listened to any FP before these polls, but the last two tracks they clocked up in 2003 were awesome. This one I swear I've heard before somewhere and it's not so good - I can't put my finger on why. Maybe another listen to all three...

(god knows who that dude clapping at the beginning of the clip is, the contrast between straggly hippies and no-nonsense The Falls is quite telling)

This is absolutely lovely, better than Kylie's (completely different) 2 Hearts (which is also good).

It's my favourite Sugababes non-single, which is why I nominated it.

I remember this song made me reconsider the whole genre of country music, which I had previously rather ignorantly written off. This song is so fierce -

In fact, I could've just quoted the whole song, as it's so quotable. But what makes it so great is that Carrie herself hams it up with a little guttural affectation. Few things are as bitter, funny, and endlessly entertaining as a wronged psycho country girl.

Ahhhhhh yes, I've heard this one before (probably thx to Frank!) and would definitely be a tick if I had any spare.

Also now 2004 is done & dusted I think we should do a "Best of Country 2000-2004" - separate post, combining all country nominations & top seeds for each year (Big & Rich clear winners for 2004, no idea about the others).

Potentially divisive question: Does 'Hotel Yorba' count as country?

I'd say yes, both to the idea and including "Hotel Yorba" - but then, I'm the guy who voted David Banner's "Cadillac On 22's" number one in my Country Critics ballot for the Nashville Scene in 2003.

You should also run your list by me and Xhuxk and Dave and Greg and Martin to see if you missed any that should count country. (E.g., I also placed a couple Bubba Sparxxx on my '03 ballot. You can always asterisk the more questionable calls.)

Max 'n' Luke and great high harmonies. Hard finding a version of an official vid that isn't sped up or the clumsy 2009 remake. Here's a good one but it's not embeddable.

So as with much of the Pipettes' stuff it's a kiss-off to an unsatisfactory man delivered as a 60s girl group pastiche (complete with lovely lovely harmonies) and so I love it for those reasons alone but the reason I nominated this specifically is that it's one of those instances where I actually identify with a song, although in this case not with the singer but with the subject of the lyrics.

The character of "ABC" is totally me, in short, and it speaks to many of my own difficulties that I have in relationships. It's kind of a succinct a distillate of what Asperger's syndrome is as I've seen, in fact, and there's a surgeon's precision behind the woah-uh-oh exterior of the Pipettes stuff , a cold exactitude.

Holy jeez this one's tough. I reluctantly swapped my Amerie tick (she seems to be doing fine) for Carrie Underwood, whom I'd reluctantly swapped for Amerie. And now I'm thinking it's wrong not to tick "Biology," but that one doesn't need the help either.

Pretty full turn out - only three missing! They didn;t have The Fall, Paleface or the Toby Keith (they never have the Toby Keith stuff, only cover versions).
