Best Song of 2004: Heat #7

Close heat last time, with barely a whisker between Big & Rich, Basement Jaxx, Outkast, NERD and Jamelia (shout out to the Jamelia street team for a last minute surge!)

By far the toughest heat of the year coming up today - I need at least ten non-negotiable ticks myself! Good luck everyone...

It does have the most ungoogleable artist, title and lyrics in the history of ever.

ARGH so hard, ticked 12 on the first pass. I know 'The Show' probably won't need my help but it was my favourite Girls Aloud song until 'Tangled Up' was released so I cannot untick it. Franz F and Rachel S can do without me though, as can the best Killers song (which I thought was two separate songs ~~until last week~~ for ages). Busted, Maroon 5 and MIA just don't make the cut.

Truly, I am shocked.

Hm, I mostly voted for Things Which Pestered Me rather than actual fave songs, on the basis that their continued presence in my head must say something after all this time. That made it much easier. OTOH, I do really like Franz.

This was one of my nominations, and I entered it for the League of Pop but

zenith had already heard it, wah. He said at the time "I totally deleted this off my harddrive the other night, but now I think maybe I shouldn't have. Weird, unpop pop."

I ranked this number one in Zenith's set ('cause I'd already heard the DJ Khaled), said this:

a debutante goes jazz-freaky, scat-punky, is an appealing rhythm babe but not enough of a drama queen

but it is BRILLIANT. [Edit: it is of course 'So Confused' by 2play/Raghav]

This heat is crazy hard. I have 3 nominations in it, though. Here they are:

Sara Evans: Fun, upbeat, and funny country, and Sara is a great country singer

Complicated situation done as a light-hearted casual ol' anything. Sara's basic warm composure turns out to be perfect for a song where a sweet breeze comes in and blows away all composure.

The basic rhythm and phrasing remind me of Chuck Berry, as does the quick story-telling. Just about perfect. Betcha in real-life the guy she left for was a brown-eyed handsome man.

In the vid I like how the teen in the back pew doesn't seem quite as shocked as the others.

Nellie McKay - The Dog Song: Cheerful and sunny, makes me happy to hear! Nellie is maybe too self-consciously cute, but I like this one.

Oh, so that's what McKay looks like. This performance is actually scary.

AC Newman - The Town Halo: Really catchy indie rock with great cello and typically nonsensical lyrics.

that's the perfect description. I cannot believe this isn't even that close to qualifying. it's his best song ever by miles.

I knew it first through the video, which was Dizzee making a 'proper' urban video with scantily clad ladies. Wasn't really impressed.

(As a footnote, that is one very shiny (literally!) video Jamelia is frolicking around in on this one. Always loved it!)

I watched that Record of the Year! It was the first time I'd seen the video to What You Waiting For? (up in the next heat btw dudes!) and I was FLABBERGHASTED at its greatness.

Still think this is the best Kanye West song eva. And if not the best song, at least the best rap. All he needed was all those marbles in his mouth, I guess. Will withdraw nindie vote for "The Rat" (it was IMPORTANT, dammit) AND the Killaz if this isn't doing better by Friday.
