Best Song of 2004: Heat #7

Close heat last time, with barely a whisker between Big & Rich, Basement Jaxx, Outkast, NERD and Jamelia (shout out to the Jamelia street team for a last minute surge!)

By far the toughest heat of the year coming up today - I need at least ten non-negotiable ticks myself! Good luck everyone...

  • You get SIX TICKS over the three bits of the poll, unless you played the investigation game on the previous heat and told us all your new favourite (and why). Put your new favourite in the box below and get an extra tick for the next heat - do it for five or more heats and get an extra nomination for 2005.

  • The top five in each heat will go through to the next stage. Make sure you rep for your faves in the comments!

  • If you want to fill in the 'best song I only heard today' box later, change your vote (or tick too many by mistake), you can edit your votes by clicking on 'Poll #12345' then 'Fill Out Poll'.

  • You have until Friday lunchtime to vote.

[Poll #1516818]

Extra ticks this heat go to [livejournal.com profile] credoimprobus, [livejournal.com profile] jeff_worrell, [livejournal.com profile] koganbot and ME (thank god).

oh THAT ONE!!!

(ah well, didn't want to tick scissor sisters really anyway)

Wot no MIA??

:-0

Truly, I am shocked.

Hm, I mostly voted for Things Which Pestered Me rather than actual fave songs, on the basis that their continued presence in my head must say something after all this time. That made it much easier. OTOH, I do really like Franz.

I ranked this number one in Zenith's set ('cause I'd already heard the DJ Khaled), said this:

a debutante goes jazz-freaky, scat-punky, is an appealing rhythm babe but not enough of a drama queen

you may have forgotten this one

[identity profile] piratemoggy.livejournal.com 2010-01-26 01:03 pm (UTC)(link)
but it is BRILLIANT. [Edit: it is of course 'So Confused' by 2play/Raghav]

(I can't work out what was the actual single mix; there's a better-than-passable garage mix (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ECfUBqq9r4Y) here)

This heat is crazy hard. I have 3 nominations in it, though. Here they are:

Sara Evans: Fun, upbeat, and funny country, and Sara is a great country singer

koganbot: (Default)

[personal profile] koganbot 2010-01-27 03:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Complicated situation done as a light-hearted casual ol' anything. Sara's basic warm composure turns out to be perfect for a song where a sweet breeze comes in and blows away all composure.

You can't fence time

[personal profile] koganbot 2010-01-27 03:56 pm (UTC)(link)
The basic rhythm and phrasing remind me of Chuck Berry, as does the quick story-telling. Just about perfect. Betcha in real-life the guy she left for was a brown-eyed handsome man.

In the vid I like how the teen in the back pew doesn't seem quite as shocked as the others.

Nellie McKay - The Dog Song: Cheerful and sunny, makes me happy to hear! Nellie is maybe too self-consciously cute, but I like this one.

Late Fright with Letterman

[identity profile] jeff-worrell.livejournal.com 2010-01-28 01:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, so that's what McKay looks like. This performance is actually scary.

[identity profile] justfanoe.livejournal.com 2010-01-26 01:11 pm (UTC)(link)
AC Newman - The Town Halo: Really catchy indie rock with great cello and typically nonsensical lyrics.

I'm not sure I've ever heard Stand Up Tall! Come to think of it, even the title is unfamiliar.

(NB: I was only listening to Dancehall in 2004)

Re: Those Dizzee Top 10 singles in order

[identity profile] lockedintheatti.livejournal.com 2010-01-27 09:26 am (UTC)(link)
that's the perfect description. I cannot believe this isn't even that close to qualifying. it's his best song ever by miles.

[identity profile] braisedbywolves.livejournal.com 2010-01-27 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I knew it first through the video, which was Dizzee making a 'proper' urban video with scantily clad ladies. Wasn't really impressed.

Only one indie record is getting a tick from me this heat...

[identity profile] freakytigger.livejournal.com 2010-01-26 01:19 pm (UTC)(link)
...and it's not Frank Ferguson or The Killers

(though "Take Me Out" is fine, and since we've put through two awful FF songs we might as well let their only good one in!)

Historians of the League Of Pop note that this heat has two tracks from Judge [livejournal.com profile] zenith's day on the bench! What I said at the time:

lovely guitar onslaught, but indie guy gets entangled in his own muscles while trying to channel Rod Stewart and Bob Dylan
credoimprobus: hand holding cigarette with flame background, text (in Finnish): you can always get a light in hell (Default)

Re: What do you get if you cross Phil Collins with Diana Ross?

[personal profile] credoimprobus 2010-01-26 02:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh SOD how didn't I notice this one on my tick-through? The one Alcazar track that I love unreservedly!
credoimprobus: cartoon dancer bear strikes a pose (dance!)

BOSH MASSIVE REPREZENT

[personal profile] credoimprobus 2010-01-26 02:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Here is some extremely glossy and propulsive trance from good ol' Lasgo. You should tick it! (...because I may possibly have to untick it myself, woe.)

hyper-bowl...

[identity profile] carsmilesteve.livejournal.com 2010-01-26 02:16 pm (UTC)(link)
read some byron, shelley and keats
recited it over some HIP. HOP. BEATS.

is up there with

when you take a sip you buzz like a hornet
billy shakespeare wrote a whole lot of sonnets

and

you read karl marx
and you taught yourself to dance

Also: Lovely Brandy & Lovely Jamelia

[personal profile] credoimprobus 2010-01-26 02:19 pm (UTC)(link)

(As a footnote, that is one very shiny (literally!) video Jamelia is frolicking around in on this one. Always loved it!)

The Thing

[identity profile] jeff-worrell.livejournal.com 2010-01-26 02:31 pm (UTC)(link)
The title is a bit nondescript but this is the song I gave to [livejournal.com profile] koganbot in the League of Pop, who put it in first place. Even [livejournal.com profile] freakytigger said it was great and threatened to play it at Poptimism, although I dunno if he did.

In short, please tick!

Well, that'll get people to tick it, as all my faves do really well here. In any event, here's a stream.

Spiel Mit

[identity profile] jeff-worrell.livejournal.com 2010-01-26 02:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Not heard this, but I like "Ich und Elaine" so am posting this now, to listen to later, in the hope it's as good.

Re: Spiel Mit

[identity profile] lockedintheatti.livejournal.com 2010-01-27 09:23 am (UTC)(link)
thanks for that - it was one of my noms. Fantastic bouncy German electro-pop. It's like a slightly less dirty version of the Goldfrapp song that's also up there.

Re: Spiel Mit

[identity profile] jeff-worrell.livejournal.com 2010-01-28 01:02 pm (UTC)(link)
May be less dirty, but it's a whole lot sexier than Goldfrapp were in their electro-glam-stomp phase. TICK VG

Only 4 ticks for Thunderbirds Are Go?

[identity profile] jeff-worrell.livejournal.com 2010-01-26 03:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Come on ppl, I don't really need to link to this, do I? It's Busted's second best song! (It's also the only good thing about the Thunderbirds movie, excepting possibly Vanessa Hudgens)

It won Record Of The Year in 2004 you know.

[identity profile] skyecaptain.livejournal.com 2010-01-27 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)

Still think this is the best Kanye West song eva. And if not the best song, at least the best rap. All he needed was all those marbles in his mouth, I guess. Will withdraw nindie vote for "The Rat" (it was IMPORTANT, dammit) AND the Killaz if this isn't doing better by Friday.

[identity profile] jeff-worrell.livejournal.com 2010-01-28 01:12 pm (UTC)(link)
there's no excuse for ticking the killers full stop! [/Lex]

[identity profile] justfanoe.livejournal.com 2010-01-28 01:39 pm (UTC)(link)
My two favorite Kanye tracks ever are "Through the Wire" and "Slow Jamz" and now it looks like neither will make it through. Bullshit.

[identity profile] sbp.livejournal.com 2010-01-29 10:44 am (UTC)(link)
Finally, something I can tick all of without wondering why I don't remember any of the songs.
