Best Song of 2003: Heat #6

Panjabi MC emerged victorious from heat #5, narrowly beating Junior Senior into second. They're joined in the next round by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Kelly Clarkson and Girls Aloud's worst single ahem.

Heat #6 features some big hitters - nine top 5 hits! Today's tracks include a Depeche Mode cover, a Eurovision entry, and some construction workers with scant regard for health and safety regulations. Let the ticks commence!

Arrgh it feels awful ticking Blur instead of Lumidee but that is one of 3 only good Blur songs that I'd actually want to listen to ever again.

And of course it's unembeddable (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b1SIsl_Zi4M). But for srs, this song is v emo and so was I for a lot of 2003 (what with being the dole, back living with parents, near mental breakdown over finals etc).

Ohhhhhhh that's who this is! At the time I assumed this was a remix of the Lumidee track.

Mark Ronson, in the days before Winehouse, made a record with Ghostface Killa and Nate Dogg called Ooh Wee. It's the kind of pop-rap classic we rarely get any more and you should really really listen and tick it.

If Ooh Wee doesn't make it through, I'm seriously considering revoking my membership of Poptimists. Best song in this heat, easily one of the best of the year.

I agree the song is one of Mark Ronson's best, but it doesn't half have a sh1t title.

Look, I am speaking as someone who regularly has to search for song titles alphabetically. 'Ooh Wee' does not bring up the same search results in my database as 'Oooh Weee' or indeed 'Ooo Whee'. ARGH.

Dwight Yoakam "Population Me." Dwight finds himself in a one-man town: engages in comically mournful warbling over a slow two-step. Reminds me of the Kinks' "Harry Rag" but with strength and banjo as well as rue.

Was for Eurovision, right? Not a proper album cut, only a B-side or bonus track.

Their performance of it at Eurovision was pretty dismal though: one of them couldn't make the rehearsal for some reason so it was a bit all over the place. Lots of running around and not much singing IIRC.

if you're not familiar with your belgian electroclash. But the insane screaming diva is great and demands a listen.

Sorta like my fantasy of t.A.T.u. waking up one morning and deciding to perform "Sister Ray."

This track is pretty much singlehandedly responsible for me thinking TV on the Radio were totally letting their potential down up until last year's Dear Science:

Footnote: it feels really weird to have this but not Staring at the Sun in the same year, as SatS will ALWAYS be a Debut EP Track to me rather than the Debut Album Single it prob is to most of the rest of the world, heh.

Also, JESUS is this ever The Heat of Bitter, Bitter Tears. First run-through gave 10 ticks, and that was with me holding back! I even had to ditch eurovision!tATu. :( (I almost unticked Gurls Aloud instead on the ususal they-don't-need-my-help grounds, but really, as this is one of only two GA must-ticks of the entire decade for me, I just couldn't.)

Okay, this is one I won't even have a tick for myself, but: still an excellent party track, irresistably sing-alongable chorus and all.
