the song, not the singer: electro shakira

Ever heard a song and thought, "Great song, wrong singer"? Shakira did two songs live on Saturday Night Live last night, both of which seemed amazing (first "She Wolf" embedded below, hopefully you'll be able to see it). And yet all the way through, I could only think "I wish someone else were doing this song," and I can't quite put my finger on why. Her earnest showmanship? No, I attribute something similar to Kylie. Her earthy sexuality? Maybe that's it. What do you think?

Yes, yes, I know this was a big hit in the UK in September, but this was the first time I heard it. The other song, "Did It Again," was simliarly great but not.

Disagree. And I also think the new album is a perfect example of doing 'weird' and experimental pop but without making a big fuss about it. Great lyrics, small tweaks and twirks which throw you off but a basis in really solid tunes. Also I LOVE her live performance dancing on She Wolf.

Maybe what you're wanting is someone with less vibrato and more anonymity. E.g., some '80s Italodisco singer taken at random. Not that I'm against Shakira being her inimitable self, but this song could convey more mystery with a more ordinary singer with a flimsier, more transparent voice.

I really can't imagine She Wolf without Shakira.

Soundalike corner: The section from around 0:50 sound like the first few lines from 'Californication' by RHCPs sung fast.
