Best Song Of 2002: NOMINATIONS

It's 2002, and it's nominations time!

NOMINATION RULES

  • 10 song per person limit on stuff that didn't chart in the UK top 40 in 2002.

  • Nominate as many charting hits as you like.

  • Nominating fewer than 10 non-charting songs is perfectly fine.

  • Do check everyhit.co.uk for chart placings: if your song might be spelled weirdly and doesn't show up in the results, try searching by artist instead of title (or vice versa) or using 'contains the word' instead of 'first few letters'.

  • Recommend posting nominations in a new comment thread rather than in the middle of another thread, as I am lazy and therefore unlikely to go digging around in nested comments etc.

  • Don't worry about repeating someone else's nomination - as far as possible I'll let you know if one of your ten picks is already nominated so you can choose another one.

  • Songs that were released in more than one year should go under the year that gave it its highest chart placing (if it didn't chart then bung it in whichever of the years you like)

  • Nominate double-A sides separately please!

  • ARGH ARGH HELP

    Some examples:

    - Person A nominates tracks 1-10 from an obscure German techno album plus Kylie and Fischerspooner.
    - Person B nominates Scooter only.
    - Person C nominates the entire top 40 from May 21st 2002 because they loved it so much.

HOW TO DETERMINE THE RELEASE YEAR FOR NON-CHARTING STUFF:

Here's the general criteria for determining what year something falls under:

    1. Everyhit
    2. Discogs UK release date
    3. Discogs US release date
    4. My werk database
    5. Wikipedia/other interweb source

So if Discogs says it was 2002 but Wikipedia says 2003 then we go with Discogs. If the song doesn't turn up on any of these I'll just take your word for it.

    ALREADY NOMINATED FOR 2002:

I should mention that I went and checked out Alley after you mentioned it in conjunction with my Lil Jon rep in whichever heat it was (hadn't even known they'd been around that long, so I'd never known to look!), and my eventual 10 is in very high danger of containing something off it as well. (Will almost certainly be enthusiastically ticking Sound Off when it comes around, too!)

General question: If we like the uncensored, non-radio-friendly version of a track, but it's the censored, possibly-even-the-title-changed version that got into the charts, can we nominate the uncensored version as if it were a Top 40 track?

    UK charters

Doves - There Goes the Fear
    Enrique Iglesias - Escape
    Rhianna - Oh Baby (www.youtube.com/watch?v=LzNGQpv-VSY)
Nelly ft. Kelly Rowland - Dilemma

    plus (2nded)

P!nk - Get the Party Started
Sugababes - Freak (this clearly should be the ultimate winner, btw)
    Eminem - Lose Yourself

... of course leaving out all other kinds of goodness. May add non-chart stuff later

(The ones I can be pretty sure there's no risk of someone else nominating, the rest I am TACTICALLY SITTING ON)

    Luke Slater - Only You*
Sneaker Pimps - Loretta Young Silks
    VNV Nation - Beloved
    Kemopetrol - Everything Under Control**
Bis - The End Starts Today

*this waged a long and bitter battle with Stars and Heroes for track off Alright on Top to be nominated, but Only You always was my fave. Still, WOE AND REGRETS.
**probably the only Finnish track I will nominate for this year, numerous other candidates in spite; the others will all have to give way to the less tactically rubbish options, I reckon, but this is one of my ALL TIME FAVOURITE SONGS EVER. I don't really have any choice but to nominate it. :D

I would also like to formally lodge a protest regarding the fact that if I decide to nominate Kate Ryan's Libertine, I will be using one of my ten slots for a song that went top 40 in 13 COUNTRIES. :( (I'm uh hoping someone else will spare me that necessity, though.)

Re: Non-charting bobbins (extremely long-winded version)

As for your protest, the rules are the rules... er, I just posted upthread that Kat needs to make occasional exceptions to the rules, but I wouldn't make it for this one or otherwise we Murricans can pretty much bitch in every poll about important world-shaking song that we have to use up one of our nominations on because it didn't chart in tiny lame old UK. In fact there's one for 2002, the [NAME REDACTED BECAUSE I AM TACTICALLY SITTING ON IT]'s emblematic [TITLE REDACTED].

Anyhow, the disadvantage is that the rules make this list even more Britcentric than it would be anyway, the advantage is that therefore we non-Brits learn a lot that we didn't know, just by going through these polls. Whereas the Brits simply stew in their complacent Britishness.

I think the only one of mine that hasn't already been mentioned (I know not why, as it's one of the top indie songs this decade) is:
The Coral - Dreaming Of You

There's a very obvious chart hit that no one has nominated and I'm going to be perverse and also not nominate it, just to see if someone else will.

    [identity profile] chuckeddy.livejournal.com 2009-09-04 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I assume these two either (1) charted and were already nominated or (2) count as a different year because of some weird Limey technicality, but for some reason they're not turning up when I search, so what the heck (either way, these two don't count as my "offical" nominations):

    Missy Elliott - "Work It"
T.A.T.U. - "All The Things She Said"

And these, which I assume did not chart (though correct me if I'm wrong) ARE my officical nominations (which will hopefully all wind up on the ballot, as one of my nominations for 2001 -- "The Luau" by Junie-B -- curiously did not):

    Ty Herndon - "Heather's Wall"
Cordelia's Dad - "Camile's Not Afraid Of The Barn"
Paulina Rubio - "The Last Goodbye"
P.O.D. - "Youth Of The Nation" (if that charted in the UK, let me know, I'll replace it)
    Kenny Chesney - "Young"
Toby Keith - "Courtesy Of The Red White And Blue (The Angry American)"
Toby Keith - Who's Your Daddy?"
    Montgomery Gentry - "My Town"
Field Mob - "Sick Of Being Lonely"
Gore Gore Girls - "Keep Your Hands Off My Baby"

Alternate choice, if one of those doesn't count or redundifies somebody else's nomination:

    Toby Keith - "My List"

Deferred to 2003, when it was actually charted as a single (though if I'm wrong, I hope somebody else nominates it):

    Faith Hill - "One"

    [identity profile] chuckeddy.livejournal.com 2009-09-04 05:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, looks like POD's "Youth Of The Nation" DID chart in the UK in 2002 according to everyhit.com (went to #36), so definitely count Toby Keith's "My List" as one of my noms.

Seeing "Work It" on there, but not the TATU song -- guess that counts as a 2003, then.

Kat, in case it gets lost in all the nesting, Dave decided to nominate "Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue" from Chuck's list, freeing Chuck up to nominate:

    Tim McGraw "Red Ragtop"

(And if this was lost in the confusion, Toby Keith's "My List" is already nominated by Chuck, since it turns out that POD's "Youth Of The Nation" did chart in Britain, hence is a free choice.)

Loads of mine already nominated, but I don't think these chart hits have been:

50 Cent - In Da Club
Ms Dynamite - It Takes More
    Eminem - Without Me
DJ Marky & XRS - LK
    Noreaga/N.O.R.E. - Nothin'
Will Smith - Black Suits Comin' (Nod Ya Head)
    Xzibit - Multiply

Nor these that I don't think did chart:

    Dave Clarke - The Wolf
    High Contrast - True Colours
Michael Jackson - Billie Jean 2002 (Bushwacka Mix)
