Best Song of 2001: Heat #8

Mercifully un-controversial results for Heat #7 - Destiny's Child get their 5th qualification of the decade so far, Jay-Z gets his 4th. They're joined by the Avalanches, OutKast and Wheatus.

What better way to round off the year than with the MOTHER of all heats - 16 top 10 hits and plenty of non-charting bangers. Get ready to wail and gnash those teeth!

This is going to require a lot of independent listening, as there are many I don't know here. In the meantime, here is "What's Your Fantasy":

But here is my pitch: southern rock at it's finest - clever lyrics, a three-axe attack (that even works on their acoustic songs, somehow), and a real sense of, I dunno, honesty? They don't take themselves too seriously (this track is from Southern Rock Opera, kindasorta inspired by Lynard Skynard) but also they aren't just messing about and have been writing and touring for ages. I hope they get famous / win some awards / tour some arenas soon!

i would just like to point out that BUBBA SPARX is currently in the lead!!! i assume this won't last?

Utterly banging technopop #1:

This was a fvcking ANTHEM for me circa writing Hole lyrics on my rucksack. (nb: it's a rather lovely smooth/semi-acoustic r'n'b jam or whatever)

I remember watching the Glastonbury coverage at home the following year, feeling pretty miserable about life/universe/everything, and they kept repeating Nelly's performance of 'Turn Off The Light' again and again and again until my indie snobbishness got worn down.

I finally sucked it up and WENT to Glasto the year after :)

it may be possible to tell I was taping the r'n'b chart this year...

possibly not as great as I thought at the time but I still like that cutesy little sinister beat and the girl sounds so fluid. Ace trip-hop.

Edit: OH. That middle eight! life: your heart is caught up with your brain/emotional or reason, now which one do you obey? it's like somebody calling you insane when overwhelmed and blessed, burst into tears of happiness -ok yes the lyrics are a bit balls but it sounds AMAZING.

I actually ended up listening to the first two Ladytron albums back to back yesterday and dere god they have some lovely melodies (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=51szgeEmbZE). The batshit lyrics just fit so perfectly with the robot voices - SAW WHO YOU WERE PICKING UP FROM THE CHEMIST. What does that even MEAN?

OK so I know that the video for WoC is kinda awesome, but Ya Mama is probably the best thing that Norman has done under the FBS moniker. Yes? No? Three bags full?

Love that "Ugly" is in the lead tho, and Eve doing so well.

This is my favourite Artful Dodger track; maybe one of my favourite songs ever. Amazing shellshocked, longing, soulful performance from Michelle Escoffery; beautiful production, from the initial tension as the beats come in to that gorgeous distant piano throughout. Actually heartbreaking.

Um, have people forgotten another Mis-Teeq single? Refresh your memories!

"Party Up" seemed to be the consensus DMX single but I much prefer the stuff off The Great Depression, which is one of the finest hip-hop albums I own - totally recommend it, and sad I couldn't nominate "We Right Here" as well.
