Best Song of 2001: NOMINATIONS

NEW NOMINATION RULE ALERT

This time there's going to be a 10 song per person limit on stuff that didn't chart in the UK top 40 that year. This means:
- we won't have 20+ heats per year
- we'll all still get to find out about those forgotten gems
- dudes won't feel bad using up their nomination quota on Kylie
- collusion will probably run rampant, oh well

Obviously you can nominate fewer than 10 non-charting songs but I have a feeling some of you will take full advantage of the quota :-)

YOU HAVE LOST ME TOTALLY.

Sorry! Here's some examples:

Person A nominates tracks 1-10 from Kompakt Total 3 (none of which charted in the UK), plus Bob The Builder and Afroman.

Person B nominates Westlife only.

Person C nominates the entire top 40 from May 21st 2001 because they loved it so much.

Person D nominates 'Sonne' by Rammstein only.

HOW ON EARTH DO I FIGURE OUT IF IT CHARTED IN THE UK THAT YEAR?

everyhit.co.uk is your friend here. If your song might be spelled weirdly and doesn't show up in the results, try searching by artist instead of title (or vice versa) or using 'contains the word' instead of 'first few letters'.

OK SO IT DIDN'T CHART IN THE UK BUT I STILL DUNNO WHAT YEAR IT WAS RELEASED?

Here's the general criteria for determining what year something falls under:

1. Everyhit
2. Discogs UK release date
3. Discogs US release date
4. My werk database
5. Wikipedia/other interweb source

So if Discogs says it was 2001 but Wikipedia says 2002 then we go with Discogs.

MY NOMINATION WAS RE-RELEASED IN A NUMBER OF DIFFERENT YEARS! HELP!

Go for the year that the song had its highest chart placing in the UK.

YOU TOTALLY MISSED ONE OF MY 2000 NOMINATIONS LAST TIME DUDE...

I recommend that you post your nominations in a new comment thread so they don't get lost in the threading (the first post of a thread always shows up). This isn't mandatory but it makes it much less likely that I'll miss them. Don't worry about repeating yourself - my spreadsheet will take care of that.

ARGH! ITS GOING TO TAKE ME AGES TO THINK OF MY NOMINATIONS!

Nominations won't close until the end of next week so you've got a while to think of some cracking tunes. I'll post reminders nearer the time.

I NOMINATED SOMETHING FOR 2000 THAT WAS ACTUALLY 2001...?

How I am I going to whittle down my shortlist of 800 to 10?

(Partial ans: by nominating at the very last moment)

What is the deadline?

[identity profile] justfanoe.livejournal.com 2009-07-07 11:08 am (UTC)(link)

It seems that most of the electro that I thought I was cool listening to in 2002 was actually out in 2001 so there you go.

I'VE STILL GOT ONE MORE!

Perhaps you should nominate "Satellite" by Bosco (since I wish I did, and now I don't have any left.)
credoimprobus: hand holding cigarette with flame background, text (in Finnish): you can always get a light in hell (Default)

Batch #1

[personal profile] credoimprobus 2009-07-07 03:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Telepopmusik - Breathe
Lasgo - Something*
Kosheen <3 <3 - (Slip & Slide) Suicide
Lil Jon & The East Side Boyz - Put Your Hood Up
Pretty Girls Make Graves - Speakers Push the Air
Oxide & Neutrino - Up Middle Finger
Muse - Bliss

(I heartily second Emerge, Another Chance and Rapture, which were also on my must-nom list!)

*) may get shunted into 2002, I guess?

[identity profile] chuckeddy.livejournal.com 2009-07-07 05:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Lots of songs above I would have nominated, for which I can be thankful and nominate this ten instead:

Thomas Ribeiro -- Rideonastar
Trick Daddy -- Take It To Da House
Koffee Brown -- Weekend Thing
Junie-B -- The Luau
Phil Vassar -- Six-Pack Summer
Brooks & Dunn -- Only In America
City High -- What Would You Do
Drive-By Truckers -- Zip City
Gary Allan -- Alright Guy
Daddy DJ -- Daddy DJ

And if any of those count as 2000 and thus are disqualified miss the boat, then however many of these instead, in this order (though if somebody wants to nominate one or more of them anyway, feel free):

Kai Tracid -- Too Many Times
Safri Duo -- Played-A-Live (The Bongo Song)
Rednex -- Spirit Of The Hawk
Gore Gore Girls -- I'm Gonna Get You Yet
Ann Lee - 2 Times
Ian Van Dahl - Castles In The Sky
DJ P And Z- Trip - The Way It Is/It's Like That/Jam On It

[identity profile] chuckeddy.livejournal.com 2009-07-07 05:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Also, please use however many of my alternative choices are allowed if any of my non-alternates (say Koffee Brown or Trick Daddy or Daddy DJ or City High maybe) did chart in the UK, thus freeing up yet more space on my list. Thanks!
