There were US and UK No 1s of 2008 polls on ILM. The UK one is pretty much wholly terrible, with a few random high points (Estelle, Ne-Yo, Beyonce). The US one is odd in that it's mostly acceptable, Perry apart, but there aren't any, like, 10/10 monsters...and most of the artists had far far better songs this year. I guess my favourite US No 1 was 'Whatever You Like'.

Haha, you can actually pit these songs directly against each other:

"Umbrella" versus "Disturbia," "Take a Bow," and "Please Don't Stop the Music" in a tag team match, winner: "Umbrella."

"What Goes Around" versus "4 Minutes" and throw in "Apologize" (why not): still "What Goes Around"

"Buy You a Drank" versus "Low" and "Kiss Kiss," winner: "Buy You a Drank"

Songs in 2008 that scan as 2007 to me: "Kiss Kiss," "Apologize," "No One," "Don't Stop the Music." (4)

Songs in 2007 that scan as 2006 to me: basically 0 -- maybe "Give It to Me" and maybe maybe "Say It Right"? Though the former only just barely made it onto a friend's year-end mixtape in 2006 and the latter really doesn't feel 2006 to me, despite being on a big '06 album.
