History of Punk?

I asked this on ILX, but got a volley of idiot responses. Anyway, does anyone know whether a history of punk music from its roots through, say, Hot Topic exists? Something that traces it from being edgy to being mainstream? Either a book, or an essay, or something?

maximumrocknroll would be best placed to deliver this i think, as it actually spans the period and has the back-issue evidentiary resources (and still exists, slightly astonishingly)

on the other hand, the "essence" of punk -- in the MRR sense and plenty others -- is probably hostile to the historicisation of itself :(

(by which i mean that such a history would always be cast in the "rock and pop narcotic" mode, where the fact of achieving historicisability would always be considered the same as losing its soul)
