What do you think of the Gurls Aloud alBUM then? Here's what I think: Chemistry thorts.

Classical music unites with GRIME! I am confident that the 70 minute suite will equal, maybe even surpass, "Mother" by Goldie.

Chico silenced: I ended up watching quite a lot of TV with 'her indoors' on Saturday night including the X-Factor. WHAT A SHOWER. On the other hand when a man who does the Timewarp immediately gets the boot one knows there is still some righteousness in the world.

And it's probably time to talk about the JCB song, isn't it?

I caught some of What Will The Neighbours Say? Live on the telly yesterday, and thought:

a) I think I like them so much at this point - you know, supporting them in the sense that you find yourself supporting bands every now and again - that I will buy their new album today and not even care if isn't as good as the last one, which it took me until this year to get.

b) 'Real Live' probably doesn't get the attention/respect it deserves in the pantheon of GA songs. Those handclaps and "dance while your dollar's going up" make it one of my favourite songs.

c) Sarah Harding scrubs up quite nicely, as they say.

Yeah, the live gig shown on T4 yesterday was really good.

Heh, I still haven't worked out which Girl Aloud is which tho. Some fan I am. (Sarah and Kimberley are easy to distinguish obv.) Actually, I think the inter-changeablness of the Girls is one of the things I like about GA. Sort of the anti-Spice Girls. No weak links, we're all pulling together as a unit, don't pigeonhole one of us as the ginger/blonde/etc one. Does that make sense?

I'm off to buy the CD in about ... 14 minutes time. I've liked all 4 tracks I've heard so far.

OK so maybe I won't buy Chemistry today then. BRITPOP ALBUM?!?! It sounds shit, frankly.

There is a very definite Britpop influence in some of the instrumentation and in the rhythms, or lack of them. I am pretty sure you wouldn't enjoy it, to be honest, though you might like a couple of the songs.

I probably will get it. But then I will probably take it back and exchange it for Hilarity Duff or something. This time last year they were my favouritest band and now they are doing fucking Britpop.

It's odd in that it's not *too* different in sound to the last album but the differences they have made might as well have been designed to annoy

alexmacpherson. But having said all that you might now like it more than you thought because of all the talking it down...

The sound is pretty different! I said on ILX that most of it sounds like amazing banging electropop mistakenly being played on dread real instruments, which does irk me, but generally it's better than I feared - the songs really are great. SWINGING LONDON TOWN!!!!

Swinging London Town is very strange.

It is, that's why I like it - it's basically the kind of thing I wanted Xenomania to aim for over the whole album, another step in the 'Graffiti My Soul' direction, and what's frustrating is that the most of the other songs would benefit hugely from it. Apart from 'Swinging London Town' none of the backing tracks are anything to shout about.

(I didn't get the Special Xmas Edition because Sainsbury didn't have it. Is it worth getting someone to burn it for me?)

I think I'll like it more on repeat listens.

I wonder if the downfall of Rachel's modern electropop influenced Xenomania's thinking on what to do with the songs, tho of course there's always been a guitar element to GA's music.

Possibly more the Rise Of Indie into the charts again but yes, similar reasoning, and Xenomania really deserve a slap for that. GA have always used guitars in moderation until now - a riff here, a riff there, balanced out by 100% electro bangers like 'The Show' - but the Chemistry guitars are just a bit ploddy, nothing like 'Love Machine' or 'Graffiti My Soul' or even 'No Good Advice'.

alex wot is yr opinion of early-doors roxy music?

(GA don't really sound like em AT ALL but they kinda sorta organise their material and their MODE OF SUBJECT ADDRESS a bit like em) (i declare)

i've never heard anything by roxy music, but i would like to! they always seem to crop up in discussions at interesting points.

The Xmas disc has ONE terrific new Xmas song (out of four attempts) which includes the line

"I'm too old for the panto and too young for the sauce"

and continues Xenomania's disturbing 'Britpop direction'

But they don't have enough welly for Slade and Wizzard.

Love the "Video Killed the Radio Star" style "oo-wah-oo"s on "Not tonight Santa" too.

The covers are all a bit... anaemic tho', so far (= at track 5)

ok I JUDGE THAT it's 2 grebt songs on the Wobs disc ("I Wanna Kiss You So" and "Not Tonight").

"Christmas Round At Ours" is to (Slade's) "Merry Xmas Everybody" as Eastenders is to the Darling Buds of May. Which could have been good but isn't somehow.

And I always feel slightly queasy whenever GA sing "daddy, daddy" (cf. last track proper on WWTNS? also).

A desperate show-off who was also the only actual entertainer on the X-Factor show. But then he sang the Timewarp.

Also I suspect being a quite bad singer can't have helped - his showmanship lasted him a while, but it could never go on forever. I thought it might only last him two shows, but there were completely dull and quite bad performances every week to throw out instead of the sort of fun and quite bad Chico performances. Now the remaining crowd are all good singers, if pretty uninteresting.

Yeah I know who I don't want to win (JOURNEY SOUTH) but the rest.... maybe the black guy with the funny-shaped head, Isabel seems to like him but he was pretty rub on Saturday.

The first X-Factor single is called "That's My Goal", I am hoping it will be a football song!

I wonder if the versions recorded by the non-winning finalists become HOT PROPERTY on the reality bootleg market?

Yes, Journey South are the Everly Brothers without the punky modern edge. Andy, who you refer to, sings various things very nicely - old crooning and sweet soul really. Given Steve's victory, he has a chance. Shayne could be a new Robbie Williams or some such if someone writes him an Angels - but there must be 10,000 people of whom that could be true. I like Brenda, when she is given something big to do. Bung her "I Who Have Nothing" and "Goldfinger" in the final and she could be in.
