The Friday Canon: LITTLE STEVIE WONDER

It's harmonica-wielding child prodigy Stevie Wonder! His 41 UK top 40 hits means thirteen ticks to show your Wonder-love.

No "Isn't she lovely"? How about "Pastime Paradise", rapped over by many.

I have never heard any of these! Even I am mildly scandalised by that. I burnt a Stevie Wonder album from the library once but lost it. The only SW song I have knowingly heard I LOVE - 'Don't You Worry 'Bout A Thing' - but it is not here.

Oh, he's tremendously overrated.

I was listening to him when he really was Little Stevie Wonder (though at age 9 I was even littler than he was, being almost four years younger than he)(shockingly, I'm still almost four years younger; I HAVEN'T CAUGHT UP AT ALL).

My favourite Stevie Wonder:

- where he is being sad but still trying to make his commercial instincts push past the sadness i.e. Yester-Me, Yester-You, Yester-Day

- where he is angry and sad at the same time, i.e. He's Misstra Know-It-All (my Wonder "pick one only")

- where he is having fun but a bit neurotic about having the fun i.e. Masterblaster (Jammin')

All these three are being somewhat unloved by Poptimists at the moment.

"Superstition" is a record I get asked for EVERY TIME when I DJ. And EVERY TIME I do not have it, because I pack my "Motown Gold Collection" 3CD set and forget it doesn't have it on.

I wish 'Skeletons' and 'Go Home' - two of his better mid 80s singles - had gone top 40 so I could tick them.

as featured in Cocksucker Blues, the footage of Stevie performing 'Uptight' while Mick Jagger dances around him = my favourite 60s thing

my hobby: locating and collating lyrical references to little stevie wonder

The Game, 'Dreams': "then my world turned black, like I was staring out of Stevie Wonder's glasses"
Lil Wayne, 'Upgrade U': 'bitch, holla, it is Lil Weezy: they cannot see me, they are like Stevie'

without fail they are awesome!

Big & Rich "I've got a spaceship, fully equipped, 'cause I'm a cowboy Stevie Wonder"

Just curious

Do we blame Stevie Wonder for Jamiroquai, or simply think that he should get a hefty cut of all their royalties?
