Let's make an ABBA CD!

A while ago [livejournal.com profile] koganbot said he was planning to investigate ABBA, and I thought, yeah, I could make him a CD! But then I thought - why don't WE make him a CD. If we asked the community to pick a track each, and cut it off when we reached 80 minutes, I bet we'd get a good blend of hits and rarities and classics and quirkies and whatnot.

So here we are - use the POLL to nominate one (ONE!) ABBA track and then I will make a CD (or a downloadable playlist thing more likely so everyone can have one).

If it works with ABBA we can use The Method on other bands too.

[Poll #1064712]

Obviously if you don't feel you know [livejournal.com profile] koganbot from [livejournal.com profile] adambot then just nominate something you think someone should hear. If you only know the hits then cool, just nominate one of the hits. And if you hate ABBA then, erm, well we'll do another poll soon I'm sure.

Does Your Mother Know is the Abba song for people who don't like Abba!

And the Abba song for people who do like Abba!

Since it's the only track on there twice, you may have a point.

I bear a grudge because it's the only Abba track that I heard but didn't associate with them, I just thought it was a standard glam stomper until someone pointed out who actually released it.

It's what Bucks Fizz were aiming for innit.

[identity profile] poptasticuk.livejournal.com 2007-10-07 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Indeed. It's my no.1 favourite, and I buy the ABBA calendar every year.

Although big love for Elaine too.
And Sitting in the Palm Tree.
And Nina Pretty Ballerina.
AND THE REST!

[identity profile] braisedbywolves.livejournal.com 2007-10-02 03:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you making all of these up? Is there unknown early funny stuff that Abba did before Waterloo?

[identity profile] atommickbrane.livejournal.com 2007-10-02 03:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Note I did not suggest When I Kissed The Teacher or Suzy Hang Around hem hem.

[identity profile] lockedintheatti.livejournal.com 2007-10-02 03:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I see my suggestion has already been taken. I'll go for "The Visitors" instead.

Hopefully someone else will suggest "Eagle"

Hopefully someone else will suggest "Eagle"
ditto this, although it doesn't seem quite Frank somehow

haha so far the picks seem to be exclusively either testosterone stompers or mopey Vistors-era stuff

[identity profile] lockedintheatti.livejournal.com 2007-10-02 03:17 pm (UTC)(link)
That's one of the reasons I wanted someone to suggest Eagle, it's always been the song of theirs that sounds most American to me, which would stand out from the others suggested so far, even if Frank didn't go for it

I really like it too but I don't know where it's from either, my mp3 says "you owe me one (bonus)" so I assumed it was obscure - perhaps it's not?

I think I got it from Fluxblog a few years back. Or it could have been Bubblegum Machine. Some right-thinking MP3 blog/thing anyway. Gloriously happy song, love it.

If I'd had my slightly more conventional hat on, I'd probably have voted for 'Honey Honey' or the seemingly very populer DYMK.

Yep, I'm pretty certain it was on Fluxblog, that's where I think I know it from

I know it from a mix CD Martin made me, so that explains the other vote... it is amazing though! Look, I copy his LJ icons too.

Think I dl'd it from an obscure lj site called [livejournal.com profile] poptimists.

Yo what's going on with accidental hivemind!!!! I thought of "Bang a Boomerang" and decided against it for "When All Is Said and Done" -- anyway, "Lay All Your Love on Me" is my new vote. (Since "Does Your Mother Know" is already taken twice).

[identity profile] atommickbrane.livejournal.com 2007-10-02 03:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I have really gone off Bang a Boomerang for a reason I can't quite specify in my isithometimeyet addled on tea state...

[identity profile] katstevens.livejournal.com 2007-10-02 03:39 pm (UTC)(link)
LAYLOM is a great one too.

[identity profile] katstevens.livejournal.com 2007-10-02 03:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I wonder how this will compare to the canon (http://community.livejournal.com/poptimists/105794.html)?

[identity profile] boof-boy.livejournal.com 2007-10-02 03:50 pm (UTC)(link)
If I was making the ABBA CD myself I'd probably go for the more obsure stuff. Everyone knows the singles and there are some real gems on the albums. Hasta Manana, Elaine (which I think was a b-side), When I Kissed the Teacher, Ring Ring.

[identity profile] katstevens.livejournal.com 2007-10-02 03:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I've changed my vote.

[identity profile] mackromackro.livejournal.com 2007-10-03 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
No "Dancing Queen".

Huh.

"The Winner Takes It All" seems to be the winner! (I don't think I've heard it. Abba I own are "Honey Honey," "King Kong Song" (rhythm not altogether dissimilar to the Kinks' "King Kong"), "So Long," and "You Owe Me One." I used to own "Gimme Gimme A Man After Midnight," but one midnight someone absconded with it.)

He or she also absconded with "Voulez-Vous." I still own the Flirts' "Voulez-Vous," however.

Helloween do a great version of "Lay All Your Love on Me" on their Metal Jukebox album!

FWIW, I also plan to be waking up to "As Good As New" (http://youtube.com/watch?v=Ec8BFI6bXcc) for a month or so, it being the first track on the CD that's in my cd player/alarm clock at the moment. (Good string intro for waking into harder disco for getting out of bed. Sounds much faster than actually it is when I wake up in the morning, which is also good for efficient bed-making.)
