"what's a CD for grandad"

on sunday while workin on this*, word of a RECORD PLAYER popped up on hackney freecycle, and i sed ME ME ME and they sed OK

on monday after work i caught the bus to stoke newington to pick it up -- tortuous journey on an over-full 73 gah bah -- and knocked on the door

"hallo i'm here for the record player"
as dad ran upstairs to bring it down, his winsome kids (boys, 4-6 i'd guess) looked at me
"what's a record player?" asked the one nearer me
"it's an ancient technology of interest to just a handful of historians" i replied (i'm great with kids!) "well you say that," said mum coming out of the kitchen grinning and sipping her tea, "but you've no idea how many responses we got after yours!"

anyway D00D i can has phonograrf again yay

*(update: r0b has cut it by 800 words but i haven't looked at the cut yet as i am workin on helvetica today)

We call it "gramophone."

(As for what CD to get Grandpa, you could do worse than CD-Rs of this five-volume set that went up while you were exploring that country to the southeast.)

(Or if that doesn't seem right for Gramps, you could give him the hip-hop mix I made called "Real Men Don't Worry 'Bout Who Anotha Nigga Fucked.")

My dad claims that Edison nicked the idea for the phonograph off my great-great-grandad. Or something.

Edison's claim to priority in the movies is pretty flimsy, or at least that was what the books I was reading back in college said - though apparently he did invent a sprocket type grabber or something that made projecting work a lot better.

I'll ask him about it when I next speak to him. In true Dad stylee I'm sure he will be v happy to tell the story again :)

I made a comment about old records to my manager, and she replied "oh, you mean vinyl?"

I did not tell her about wax cylinders.

(you need to get a player for those!)
