Melody, Jessica, Carmit, Kimberley, uh something something something. I only know those names b/c of Snoop's rap on 'Buttonz', I dunno which ones are which - I don't mind though because everyone needs backing singers, plus there are so many of them that when they march towards the camera in the 'Buttonz' video they seem like a particularly unstoppable 14-legged (16-legged? how many ARE there?) sexdroid.
my TRU FEMINIST thing is exaggeration obv, no more than most pop divas really, but I certainly don't think they're anti-feminist in any way and there needs to be a counter to the really lazy criticism of them everywhere. I love Nicole's voice (esp that ascending wind tunnel effect thing on 'Buttonz') and think she's pretty - no idea whetehr the album will sink or swim, I'm useless at predicting these things, if it sinks in the UK it'll be another excuse to call Britishers racist again though.
Not according to the site... http://www.pcdmusic.com/-/Main.aspx?pbt_name=Artists
(those are the best artist bios evarz, for sheer 'you know they actually do write these profiles/blogs themselves factor, eg: 'I'm Nicole and I'm a cancer!')
we dont hate "urban" music. if you mean actually street music etc. we bum grime for example.
we just hate american 'slinky r&b', with all the corniness and slow-motion oiled up sex in the videos because it doesnt run in line with the british way of having sex. we just find that kind of thing really, really lame and cant relate to it.
its less "hate" and more "taking the absolute piss" because we just dont take that kind of thing very seriously. and as someone rightly pointed out upstairs, its not exclusively black music anyway. there's a lot more to black popular culture than women in thongs grinding around.
yeah i know british people are rubbish at sex, it's not something to brag about.
but if anything british people hate "proper" urban street music even more than poppy r&b! When was the last time something like Crime Mob or TI charted? And they definitely hate grime, look at its astounding commercial success innit. I'd also put MIA's almost total lack of sales down to racism too.
