I ticked both AWESOME (cos Super Villain is) and BOTHERD, which is how I feel about the 'debate' - PCDs are at most a lazy marker for bigger cultural stuff, I don't see them being specially relevant, maybe they are in the states.
As I said on my lj I am sensing RESISTANCE to my repping for Nicole and am consequently feeling bolshy. What is people's problem with r&b divas, srsly?
I haven't looked on the Popjustice forums to check their reaction to her. Frankly, I daren't.
I don't think they're the feminist heroes the Lex might want to say they are but they are pretty damn good innit.
It is a shame that half of their album is RUBBISH FILLER. More 'I Don't Need A Man' and 'Beep' plz now thx.
Also Melody (far right) is the cutest thing ever. The best thing about them is possibly the fact that photo is totally shopped together (the original, individual ones are in the album inlay) so for whatever reason they decided to amateurly chop a load of separate photos together instead of taking a photo of them all together for the album cover? Lulz.
they're a band made up of the slaggy mums outside primary schools!
i liked the idea of a song called "don't you wish your girlfriend was hot like me" from the moment i heard of it...then i actually heard it and its just a shit song rly. but i like the "concept".
i suppose i just like being hotter than people's girlfriends.
I actually hated PCDs at first, and still don't much like that song, b/c I'd heard the Tori Alamaze original first which I think is loads better, a lot sultrier and more effective, and she got dropped when it was given to the PCDs so I took against them. Somehow missed both 'Stickwitu' and 'Beep' at the time but 'Buttonz' was my conversion point...
The album is basically an unbroken glorious run of six singles then a load of dodgy cabaret covers.
...first of all 'Don't Cha' has great rapping from Busta - two minutes of 'not sure what the eff is going on but they're paying me well'. The song itself is very strangely structured - lots of space between each of the vocal phrases but musically nothing different happens inbetween! Compare to eg 'Buttonz' where they have the same sort of string-of-words followed by a pause, but this time the vocal pause gives way to an awesome eastern string sample. Perhaps the PCDs haven't got much lung capacity? Anyway, I like 'Dont Cha''s minimal approach - it's really grown on me over the last few months.
I never really "got" PCD until I heard the work of genius that is 'Buttonz' - after that, when I revisited some of their earlier work, I finally appreciated that they are to the US pop scene what Gurls Allowed are to the UK. Still haven't heard any of Nicole's solo stuff, but surely it be amazing, non?
I had to tick 'Awesome' even though I'd rather there was an option that said 'Actually not as good as a lot of other people doing similar stuff, but infinitely preferable to 95% of their detractors'.
you guys know that nicole sang all of the vocal parts on the album, right? so really the others (i'm impressed that someone knows one of their names) are just in service to her, like bridesmaids at a particularly ill-designed wedding between nicole and jimmy iovine, who's been the key to this project getting plastered all over the states because he's in luvvvv with her and has been trying to break her since the eden's crush days. not so much with the feminism there, ahem.
anyway they are horrible in pretty much every way, sorry lex. i really can't stand nicole's voice (and given the lyrics of 'dontcha,' i don't think it's too out of bounds to say that i think her face looks like someone had a silly putty accident), and i think they are completely vapid (i can sort of see your feminist point about 'beep,' but only sort of, and the whole woman-as-object thing that seems to be their m.o. is pretty much the entire point of the song!). the scherzinger solo album has 'tank' written all over it -- interscope is using the same leak-singles-until-they-stick panicked strategy that it used with the 50 cent album -- unless some ballad comes along and rescues it.
Melody, Jessica, Carmit, Kimberley, uh something something something. I only know those names b/c of Snoop's rap on 'Buttonz', I dunno which ones are which - I don't mind though because everyone needs backing singers, plus there are so many of them that when they march towards the camera in the 'Buttonz' video they seem like a particularly unstoppable 14-legged (16-legged? how many ARE there?) sexdroid.
my TRU FEMINIST thing is exaggeration obv, no more than most pop divas really, but I certainly don't think they're anti-feminist in any way and there needs to be a counter to the really lazy criticism of them everywhere. I love Nicole's voice (esp that ascending wind tunnel effect thing on 'Buttonz') and think she's pretty - no idea whetehr the album will sink or swim, I'm useless at predicting these things, if it sinks in the UK it'll be another excuse to call Britishers racist again though.
There are backup vocals singing credits for Carmit, Melody and Kimberley on several of the songs on the album. Some of them are just dancers, it's true but it's not totally Nicole. Also, Melody's solo single= clearly actually can sing. She's done guest spots on other people's songs, too.
I hope that, if they do another album, they let the others have some lead vocals sometimes.
I hate 'Super Villain' but I think Nicole's solo album is potentially v. interesting- I like the song she did with Puff Daddy a lot.
I find them far less offensive than the Suicide Girls.
despite what was said above, i do think PCD are a bit, maybe not beyond the pale, but certainly outliers, if you will. why bother with the PCD charade when in fact nicole is the only singer. here is a group composed of singer + five, six, seven woman being sleazy. pop culture perhaps, but pop music? no, sorry. marketing scheme.
