they're like Paris - the amount of times they come up in columns, debates etc unbidden, the sheer number of times that I've seen "slagging PCDs off" as shorthand for "patting oneself on the back for one's liberal social attitudes and intelligence", is surely indicative that large-scale idiocy is happening here.
I kind of feel sorry for the next person who mentions them to me in conversation b/c I will probably bite their head off. I can't believe the disinterest here, it's almost as offensive as the detractors!
I have to say I've not seen much evidence Lex of people slagging them off who I'd otherwise expect to like R&B - disinterest yes but not a lot of hostility. But then I'm not pitching them to the Grau!
Maybe they serve some people as a marker for "what we don't like about pop now" in the way that I might make a handwavey reference to Nash or Calvin Harris or Pigeon Detectives, way out of proportion to the actual badness of those people (OK maybe not Calvin Harris' actual badness which is genuinely phenomenal). If so I don't mind because almost everyone apart from the most rigorous pop saints does it.
I expect everyone to like r&b though especially poptimists, this is rather optimistic I admit. Nash/Harris/Pigeon Detectives are all really genuinely awful, none of our handwavey references to them are out of proportion in the slightest!
The other small factor here is that they really are astonishingly successful. With the kidz, etc.
I like pop. I really, really dislike new-style R&B. (As opposed to Rhythm & Blues) Nobody can sing a straight tune any more, it's all wiggly tune divas.
i was quite critical of them initially. i really wouldn't have been if i liked their songs. the sentiments and image are not exactly beyond the pale in girlband terms so yeah that's not a particularly interesting issue to go through now. and i like some RnB and hate some other RnB - crazy as it may sound to some!
