Extra-Curricular Canon

You will recall that on Monday we spent time talking about pop stars who do OTHER STUFF. Well, having scientifically aggregated the poll results we can now determine exactly which musicians are best at OTHER STUFF, using the time honoured canon format. You get five picks per category except for visual arts, where you only get four. GOOD LUCK.

[Poll #1035527]

ALSO! I posted the Pop Open groups yesterday, for those of you with big friendslists.

ALSO ALSO! That's enough interests now, ta.

ALSO ALSO ALSO! Apparently it is ALEX JAMES who now makes cheese and farms things. Graham Coxon doubtless has many fascinating strings to his bow too though.

No Myleene Klass? She's my 2nd favourite astronomer of all time!

[identity profile] imluxionverdin.livejournal.com 2007-08-08 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. Myleene Klass should be there. I quote from a website;

"Klass is now studying astronomy with the Open University."

Aw I would have liked to tick someone for being good at fashion design but CSS look uniformly TERRIBLE so I can't imagine Ira is any good.

Astro PhD submission + playing GSTQ on guitar made out of fireplace and knitting needles on top of Buckingham Palace = OK by me. Even if he has got silly hair and likes Mika a bit too much.

I'm almost certainly going to go back to this and add a vote for Gerard Way when I have read his comic but for now it feels like cheating to vote on the basis that "I have not read it but am sure it will be GREBT".

I have ticked Brian May because I would not know from reading it if his PhD was any good but a proper scientist (i.e. not a Queen fanboy) bigged up his sk1llz in the BBC article.

Is Wener's writing really Any Good At All? Rly?

[identity profile] ms-bracken.livejournal.com 2007-08-08 12:07 pm (UTC)(link)
What I read of her book in a shop a few years ago... failed to engage. So probably nt rly.

I guess it's just going to be me ticking Andy Lau, but really he's AMAZING.

[identity profile] cis.livejournal.com 2007-08-08 11:56 am (UTC)(link)
no, no, I'm ticking him as well! he is indeed fantastic (at both!).

I have a feeling no-one else will tick Ninomiya but mostly because no-one else bothered to see Letters from Iwo Jima. sadface.

[identity profile] braisedbywolves.livejournal.com 2007-08-08 11:59 am (UTC)(link)
Is it the same Andy Lau? Crucially is it the one who directs or the one who acts?

[identity profile] lockedintheatti.livejournal.com 2007-08-08 12:30 pm (UTC)(link)

MC Harvey could win golden boots at the World Cup for all I care but he will never get a tick off me after what he did to poor Alesha. He didn't even say sorry!

[identity profile] jeff-worrell.livejournal.com 2007-08-08 11:55 am (UTC)(link)
haha dude I think it's Alex James who is the farmer and cheesemaker!

[identity profile] ninebelow.livejournal.com 2007-08-08 11:59 am (UTC)(link)
Weedy little Coxon just isn't cut out for the farming life.

Brie Larson

[personal profile] koganbot 2007-08-09 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
Tom - I missed the nominations, and anyway she's not famous enough to really qualify, but my money is on Brie Larson: only 17 (unless she just turned 18), already acted in a major studio movie, made an album on a major label, and puts out her own literary magazine and is really good at writing and singing (haven't seen her movie). Could end up as anything from a college professor to a stand-up comedian.

Cory Taylor from Slipknot has now been writing a consistently entertaining and insightful column in Rock Sound for six years (and according to this month's, he doesn't even actually get paid for doing so) spanning my readership of the magazine and I've always enjoyed his writing, much to my surprise given I thought he might well be a bit of a knob but he even quite endears Slipknot to me via the column.
