THE HISTORY OF POP PART 3 aka Are You So Deaf That You Cannot Hear?

No Music Day? NOW MUSIC DAY more like. The first two songs have been entered into the Poptimists Pop'n'Poll hall of fame and they are:

NOW 1: The Human League - Fascination
NOW 2: Frankie says RELAX.

Applause, huzzahs etc. Nena was a v.close runner up on Now 2 with Cyndi Lauper, the Smiths and some other people also doing well. Poor old SNOWY WHITE and the mysterious Julia and Company did worst of all.

Today's poll has all sorts of "they were on a NOW??" entries, and was going to be accompanied by YSIs of some 'prime cuts' from 1 & 2 but this must wait until tomorrow cos I fvcked up the YSI somehow. As ever, comments more than welcome.

[Poll #617109]

Propaganda MUST win, but of course will not. NEVER LOOK BACK! WHY DOES IT HURT? DON'T BE A FOOOOOL...

I watched the video to 'Dancing With Tears* In My Eyes' on V:MX last night and by jovi it is quite powerful and moving, no really.

*i initially typed 'teats' there, which would be a different experience though no less powerful nor moving.

I must confess I am curous about the Glitter track, if only because I didn't know he had released anything in the 80s apart from collab. with poor unsuspecting 8 year olds Cauty and Drummond.

[identity profile] chezghost.livejournal.com 2005-11-21 02:45 pm (UTC)(link)
i gave 'red Guitar' the thumbs up tho i don't think i have actually heard it. feel free to disqualify him (but not me).

i am currently at a loss as to explain my past love for 'One Better Day' - i still like the sax tho

[identity profile] jeff-worrell.livejournal.com 2005-11-21 02:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I own all of these!

Because I own NOW 3 (or rather my sister does = same diff.)Therefore all of them are any good at all*. But even w/o that ownership factor, it must be said that this is a v. strong comp**, easily superior to NOWs 1 & 2.

*Note: I cannot remember how either the G.Glitter or "Susanna" goes.
**Warning note: "Dr. Mabuse" is the single edit, so doesn't have the Penderecki strings; dock a point for that.

[identity profile] chezghost.livejournal.com 2005-11-21 02:51 pm (UTC)(link)
i need all versions of 'Dr Mabuse' if anyone is offering them like...

I think the Duran Durangalangalang poll needs photos, especially for the young kids.

john taylor is still foxy!

[identity profile] jauntyalan.livejournal.com 2005-11-21 02:52 pm (UTC)(link)
i could not do the duran thing for this reason - i was never a big fan, and never distinguished beween them, and would not as such recognise all but Simon bonbon.

i'd go for the one that helped produce that dandy warhols album. if i could remember who that was.

[identity profile] jauntyalan.livejournal.com 2005-11-21 03:00 pm (UTC)(link)
also i should get bonus poptimist (and "hey wtat's this? it's got a good beat!" dad) points because i got a piXoR of Duran^2 into a Coordinated Science text book, illustrating sublimation with a dry ice effect HO HO!

These polls have made me realise, yeah, that "Two Hearts" (a cover, mind you) and "AAO" are actually enjoyable. Go Phil!

[identity profile] jauntyalan.livejournal.com 2005-11-21 03:52 pm (UTC)(link)
pearl in the shell is the one with the ace trumpet stab intro over a regular drum beat:

DA! deee didedi-deee dah, duh dee DAh! DAh!

Time after Time is better than Dr Mabuse.

random thoughts

[identity profile] steviespitfire.livejournal.com 2005-11-21 03:49 pm (UTC)(link)
1. It does stick out a bit on a list with Young at Heart on it.

2. I'm thinking that there are more outright pop songs on the list that people are opting for.

3. It's a bit scary

i never even heard 'Mabuse' until recently so am not surprised by indifference really.

in the pub on Friday i tried to explain why it may qualify as PROG but it didn't really happen (side question: what is most Prog song on a Now compilation, even in radio edit form?)

Good old YOUNG AT HEART! Fun hater!

Mah BOOO Sehr is ALSO grebt

BUT! Smalltown Boy is BESTER!!

(She says because she listens to Mabuse all the time and recent one-off listening to Small Town Boy = extra treat).

Re: random thoughts

[identity profile] jauntyalan.livejournal.com 2005-11-21 05:26 pm (UTC)(link)
small town boy is the obv runner up after two tribes. what is wrong with ppl not voting for this song, it is CLEARLY the right answer. that frankie won NOW2 is not a consideration.

[identity profile] katstevens.livejournal.com 2005-11-21 03:35 pm (UTC)(link)
After looking at the pixors I have decided to change mein mind and go for Other Taylor, despite his sunglasses. The rest of them look a bit haggard.

[identity profile] plumsbitch.livejournal.com 2005-11-21 05:48 pm (UTC)(link)
You mean people *don't* have Duran Duran's pretty faces burned into their retinas?

Oh, and Against All Odds=the W0rst. Except when shloshed. Then=almost as good as Small Town Boy which=Simply the best.

[identity profile] dorsalstop.livejournal.com 2005-11-21 07:11 pm (UTC)(link)
If I could have voted for 'Robert de Niro's Waiting' in the ILM 80s Poll it would have been TOP. Girls Aloud need to cover this pronto.

Susanna
