The History Of Pop Part 65 aka Jumping In My Tutu

Happy 2nd Birthday Poptimists!

As a celebration, here's a trip down memory lane - a NOW poll! For more recently arrived posters, the NOW Polls covered the first 64 volumes, and ended at around this time last year. There are now three more volumes, not that I'm intending to poll all three, but enough water has flowed under the pop bridge for a summer-of-06 lookback to not feel ENTIRELY like a pointless exercise.*

[Poll #1020712]

*in a relative sense, of course.

I was going to say, it's a bit early for that - this time last year all we had was 'Maneater'. But it's July already! How did that happen? And I can't even think of anything on the horizon...Kat DeLuna would be perfect but I don't even know if it'll be released over here, Lil' Mama and Nicole Scherzinger are both scheduled for the autumn...though Amerie and maybe Dizzee will be along in a week or two.

i think Audio Club could've done a lot better if it had been released in the UK right NOW...not sure it was released here at all. i think it's very Summery anyway.

replace Fratellis and Jimorrison and "Bob Sinclar" with Lily, All Saints and Gnarls and that would be one of the greatest blocks in a Now poll EVER. makes one year ago seem much better than it felt at the time.

[identity profile] katstevens.livejournal.com 2007-07-13 02:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed (if the Fratellis were also removed). Last year seems super-awesome! I blame Timba-overdose for this year's relative drought. Mark Ronson and Groove Armada don't really fit the bill for our producers-du-jour.

OTHER PROBLEMS WITH THIS YEAR:
- too many indie busker boys
- I haven't been watching half as much Hits!TV
- or going out dancing (this hopefully to change in August!)
- not enough interest in Sophie Ellis Bextor :(

If anything there are a few I wouldn't have ticked at the time which I really love now - 'Rock Steady' and 'Something Kinda Ooooh' especially, they were underwhelming at the time but really grew on me.

I was going to say that the years distance is about long enough to judge whether something has 'legs' for good or ill. For example the Snow Patrol track is actually worse than the Fratellis, but I don't hear it as often.

[identity profile] chezghost.livejournal.com 2007-07-13 02:18 pm (UTC)(link)
astoundingly, no. The Killers and Shakira both grown on me a lot in last 6 months. 'Suprefreak' gets a tick because I would dance to any version of that drunk at the disco. Hoff gets tick because it makes me laugh (tho probably shouldn't).

[identity profile] umlauts.livejournal.com 2007-07-13 03:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I quite liked the Aguilera then, but now I think it's awful. Mostly because there was an amazingly gay-tastic dance of her NEXT single that did everything I really wanted from a C.Ag single and now everything else sounds crap.

"America" by Razorlight

why do I love this song so much?

[identity profile] carsmilesteve.livejournal.com 2007-07-13 02:09 pm (UTC)(link)
is chasing cars the one off of the football? i MIGHT have to go back and give it a ticky, but i'm not sure which one it is...

[identity profile] chezghost.livejournal.com 2007-07-13 02:16 pm (UTC)(link)
that might be 'Spitting Games'. i dunno i think every Snow Patrol song ever has been used on football telly at one point or another.

"I might as well take a gun and PUT IT TO HIS HEAD!"

I forgot how amazing 'Unfaithful' was! This is her second best single after 'Umbrella' and 'Pon De Replay'.

Dude, it's TERRIBLE. All that emo 'I don't want to be a MURDERER' well STOP SHAGGING THE OTHER DUDE THEN. It's worse than BRIGHT EYES!

Re: "I might as well take a gun and PUT IT TO HIS HEAD!"

[identity profile] justfanoe.livejournal.com 2007-07-13 02:44 pm (UTC)(link)
How can it be her second best single if it's worse than two of her other singles?

The best song by the Rihanna who I think is closest to, like, the REAL Rihanna, if that makes sense. Totally bizarre, borderline psycho (but not in a performative "Breakin' Dishes" way, like seriously effed up!), completely bonkers in a way that almost none of her stuff on "Good Girl Gone Bad" (except maybe "Question Existing"?) is. I want her to go off the deep end, since her voice isn't gonna change and the run-the-gamut pop production just proves that her biggest asset and biggest drawback is (potentially) HER in all her zaniness.

1) correct

2) correct

i have the song in my head but it's hard to describe beyond 'la la la and i'm borderline'

it reminds me of Bent's 'Magic Love' not that that would be much use to you either.

You know, I have it downloaded and I have heard it but I don't remember, so I didn't tick. But I think I should have.

It's certainyl better than fucking LDN. REALLY NOW PEOPLE, THAT SONG IS AWFUL.

Did anyone procure a copy of Ms Poole's solo album? "Totally Underwater", the teaser download thing, was pretty great.

Hips Don't Lie by a million miles!

God, I hate the Scissors Sisters.

I think I ticked about twenty things on this. 'I Don't Need A Man' is BRILLIANT in a 'comedy dancing in bedroom' way but 'Yeah Yeah' is AMAZING in a 'comedy dancing in Y Bae' way and 'Something Kinda Oooh' is hardly shabby. In the end I went with Pussycat Dolls because I just put it on and it sounded fucking ace, whereas I don't have a copy of 'Yeah Yeah' and my 'Something Kinda Oooh' single is downstairs in a box.
