I finally heard 'Biology'. What is everyone on about? It's not all that. I mean, it's OK, but I expect much much more of our Girls. Basically, if 'The Show' sounded like the choruses from three different songs welded together, 'Biology' sounds like the bridges from three different songs Sellotaped together. In other words, a bit like Franz Ferdinand. And the girls sound...shrill.

You're wrong on this one. Anyway it's three pre-choruses building up to one chorus.

Cis warned me about it and I was sceptical. And last night I was all like "you were right!" And she was like, ummmm it's a grower, and started singing the best bit (which I can't remember, it's near the end).

I played 'Graffiti My Soul' instead.

I really liked it from the first time I heard it, and have been humming all four bits. The only bit where their voices could be a little less strident is the blues-riff bit at the start, but it gives the song a bit of impact.

It's hardly getting any airplay as far as I can tell, though: I think it's going to flop.

Yeah I definitely was turned off by the blaring blues riff.

I'm surprised about the lack of airplay! It does seem like exactly the type of song which would be perfect, commercially, for GA right now.

i too think it's just OK - but then i thought that of The Show, and that grew on me a little, largely for dancefloor reasons. this has grown on me a teensy bit. i'm starting to worry about the new album :-(

Not entirely inaccurate though, I thought the same thing. The difference is that I think the bits that make up 'Biology' are stronger and segue together more nicely than the components of many of the songs on the new FF album (I would like 'I'm Your Villain' a lot more if it only stuck in that first groove).

That's the main problem I think, the Biobits segue into each other rather clunkily - in exactly the same way as FF, that same 'look! different bits segueing! look!' archness. I mean, I do like it in a 7 out of 10 way though, which doesn't apply to FF.

I am giving it 10. I think some people are a bit too suspicious of pop being 'knowing' and 'clever' these days, as if to like something like 'Biology' was to look down one's nose at simpler tunes.

I wish 'Biology' was more knowing and clever.

I think a lot of people mentally disconnect 'clever and knowing' from 'emotionally potent' - the old heart/mind dualism. but it's so often the case that a slightly knowing attitude, some of yr good old-fashioned pomo meta references, can be the precise emotional catalyst. like 'slow jamz'.

yes it IS a bit franz but in a PERFECTLY GOOD WAY.
