It won't, cos I'm not asking whether everyone actually likes it! I don't care about that, it's the individual's perception of "everyone liking". & who "everyone" is I guess.
But lots of people really dislike the Doors (blame Val Kilmer!) so I dunno if that counts as 'everyone likes'. Well, I thought that they were definitely divisive as a band.
'Hotel California' came up while I was discussing this in the pub with someone the other day. I think the average pub jukebox's most played tracks might probably reveal the answer to the question though (god forbid it is 'Angels,' the lyrics to which (complete with karaoke style instructions like 'repeat to fade' they have PRINTED ON CANVAS, IKEA-style and put on the wall above the jukebox in my local to the mystification of literally everyone concerned, that's even without mentioning that 'The Drugs Don't Work' is also there in similar fashion) and I suspect this means it is something by the Stereophonics ('A Thousand Trees?') although this may just be due to the Law of Wales.
It might be the Law of Wales, since it's my perception that most people hate the Stereophonics, and only the obsessive purchases of subterranean mole men who see Kelly Eyebrows as their king has kept them from being droppped.
When I said that about HotRS I firstly meant that lots of poptimists were ticking it!
But it is also true that it spans many a demographic: - Dads - Metallers - Folk/Blues dudes (obv) - Grandparents (some crossover with 'Dads' here I guess) - Garage Bands (cf 'Easy Guitar Tunes Book 1') - Anyone who's ever scammed the rest of their band by volunteering to pop down to the office and register the song with PRS, and put themselves as the Trad Arr. and get £royalties++
Maybe I'm missing the point here, but surely 'House of the Rising Sun', 'Hotel California', 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' - these are actually very good songs, well constructed and performed. And not everyone loves them. Surely the purpose of this was to find a song that is actually a "bad song" (i.e. poorly written, poorly performed), despite which everyone still loves it? I repeat my original assertion that it's Shampoo.

Actually, how about "Lay Your Hands"?
Is "Hey Ya" the best song that everyone hates?
