GOOD FRIDAY POPTIMISM - Dancing! Live Bands! Crisps! Market Research!

In case you didn't know, we have a POPTIMISM ALL-DAYER at the Union Tavern in Clerkenwell this Friday. We are men not beasts - by "all-dayer" we don't intend starting before 3. But if you come along at 3 you will get the FULL PROGRAMME OF ACTIVITIES including:

- Crisp tasting!
- Boardgames
- Martin "Lover Man" Skidmore's Smooth Soul Selection
- The GRAN'S DOLE POPRY with Tim Hopkins on the decks and Tracer Hand on a beat-up old geetar.
- Acoustical sets from top acoustical songwriters!
- Kate and the Kurves playing something which may or may not be acoustic, to be honest I don't know, but it will be GREBT I am sure!
- A special transatlantic pop love-in from MC MC and Lena.
- The usual DJ rampage from Carsmile, the Barnet Ape, and this month Matt DC and Starry Sarah.

And what am I doing in all this? Nothing less than the riotous return of the POP MUSIC FOCUS GROUP. This venerable Freaky Trigger feature was famous for being very complicated and taking 3 months to compile: now however we will get it turned around in UNDER AN HOUR* thanks to the miracle of pen and paper technology. Be there, upstairs, from 8 to 9 to have your say on the hits of 2007 so far. It'll be like a poll come to life! (except less scary).

*& then I'll post it on FT on the Saturday.

Bah I totally picked the wrong weekend to go home (though in fairness the four-dayness of this particular weekend was one of the factors there anyway).

HUZZAH!

Also: BRING YR UNWANTED REKKIDS and swap them for other people's unwanted rekkids! Any remainders will go to an chairidee shop. I might finally get to offload my Ocean Colour Scene tape...

[identity profile] jauntyalan.livejournal.com 2007-04-03 12:07 pm (UTC)(link)
is this happening, or is it a bit of a 'mare? cos i rly need to get down and brutal with my cds. i reckon i can aim to free up 30 or 40 at least

[identity profile] katstevens.livejournal.com 2007-04-03 12:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm. I would advise all rekkid-bringers to Use Their Discretion - ie if You bring 20 binbags of rekkids and no-one takes them then it is likely that You will be taking them to the chazza shop yrself. I don't mind a couple of carrier bags full though.

boardgames

i will absolutely definitely bring TAKE THE BRAIN (http://www.abstractstrategy.com/takethebrain.html)

but dr nim is too fiddly, the london game (http://www.tragsnart.co.uk/gamehub/reviews/londongame.htm) is probably a bit too boring, and drake! (http://freakytrigger.co.uk/ft/2006/08/i-was-a-sea-goblin/) is the ONLY ONE IN EXISTENCE POSSIBLY -- so i am not going to bring them :( (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dr._NIM)

I am sorry I will be missing the return of the focus group! Are there possibilities for long distance participation?

I think the only time I remember doing it remotely I got an email and emailed back in some comments which were added to the mix. I could certainly try and replicate the necessary level of inebriation, although only under strictly scientifically controlled conditions and trained supervisions! I guess you don't want to have to factor actually thought-through comments by a million randoms.

plus also don't forget the "3 months" factor (probably a conservative estimate by Tom there actually!)

Hurrah for board games and my first focus group :)

Where is this tavern? I am moving my grandparents' house on Friday but they live in Surbiton so I could detour* on my way home for some drinkage.

There's a Real Tuesday Weld song about Clerkenwell but I am assuming possibly not the same one? Probably wouldn't aid my "cor, look at all them 'ouzes, don' see whur they keep all thur cows, I don'" fear of London.

*My grasp of London/Greater London's geographics is a bit similar to when people suggest Newcastle and Manchester are the same place because they are above Birmingham etc.

Ah, if I navigate the perplexities of the underground I may make it there, assuming I leave the grandparentals' early enough.

I have the wrong nickname! I regard one of the tracks I am intending to play (not smooth soul) as my theme song, because of its refrain "the ugly man is the only man whose music we want to hear".

I have also worked out the perfect ending for a set that will be followed by a country set. It will make Tim happy, I am sure.

[identity profile] dubdobdee.livejournal.com 2007-04-03 12:56 pm (UTC)(link)
is it that song by steps?

[identity profile] byebyepride.livejournal.com 2007-04-03 01:46 pm (UTC)(link)
steps are the perfect ending to anything, and everything, and I hope that when the earth boils away into the sun as the universe explodes into fiery nothingness the music of the spheres will finally be revealed as being '5,6,7,8'. How we will laugh, if our souls are not being tormented for all eternity by pointy-tailed demons.

[identity profile] martinskidmore.livejournal.com 2007-04-03 03:16 pm (UTC)(link)
No, but you aren't so far from the right track.

damn! hate to miss a focus group :(
