I Love #1s - 1995

Last week's journey back into the murky origins of the UK singles chart saw a clear win for Lita Roza's tribute to canine consumerism. 'How Much Is That Doggie In The Window' needed a mere 7 ticks to claim the crown of 1952/3. That's that out of the way! This week we have the year of battles: Blur v Oasis, Robson v Jerome, Coolio v Michelle Pfieffer. It's 1995!

One suspects the winner here should be "Cotton-Eyed Joe."

Of these songs, only Coolio and "You Are Not Alone" were American #1's, so there's a pretty significant divergence here. A pretty weak slate of #1's in the UK in any event.

It's a shame Earth Song will probably end up not making it onto Power Ballads CDs as it is a proper example of the genre.

Livin' Joy is one of the best songs ever ever ever. Also I continually confuse 'Country House' with 'Peaches' by the Presidents of the USA.

Have we done a Simply Red canon? It's time for the Red Revival.

Drums courtesy of a sample of 'Givin' It Up' by the Goodmen, released two (2) years previous. I thought this was an OUTRAGE at the time, and that there should be at least 10 years elapsed before one song was allowed to sample another and try and pass it off as something 'new'. Also I resented Simply Red (overplayed in the car by my Mum) nicking a song I LOVED (I used to drum along to The Goodmen on my tape of Now 26)!

Simply Red canon is in the 'to do' list. I fear it greatly.

The day the Simply Red canon takes place, I will revoke my membership of Poptimists. I cannot condone any poll or posting that suggests that Hucknall is anything other than the most detestable musician ever to have been paid to record music. I will, of course, accept if 95% of the options in the canon are "I HATE MICK HUCKNALL".

When the revolution comes, he'll be first up against the wall. Followed swiftly by the Lighthouse Family.

I dunno, Holding Back Your Ears and Munny's Too Tight To Mention weren't bad. No ginger prejudice here!

Discussion in that home of champions THE PUB focussed on "Something Got Me Started". Expect a trial run at Poptimism soon.

I think 'Stars' would be good, if someone covered it.

People tend to confuse "better than usual" with "any good at all" re 'Fairground'.

I was never so disappointed in Steffi Graf as when I found out she was going out with M Hucknall.

I liked all the singles off this album at the time, even the babies one is probably "any good at all". I had to suppress the urge to buy the CD several times in the 90s.

My Mum had Stars on perpetual loop in the car. I still know pretty much all of the words. And the one note piano solo on 'Something Got Me Started'.

I love 'Lifted', but especially 'Ocean Drive'.

Realising that 'Fairground' was actually good was a key step on the round to poptimism for me.

Dreamer really, really is timeless; I almost overdosed on that infectious bassline (surely an M1, surely?) at college. Italo-piano-house without the piano. Oh, wait, there is piano, but it's not very important. It's all about the organ.

'Dreamer' is one of my all time top turnarounds (from HATING it in 1994 to loving it about 5 years ago and thereafter).

This is one of the best songs ever written. Top work there Levi's for picking it. When we get round to '96 there is a slew of jeans commercial number ones...

I quite liked 'I Believe'! Was thoroughly sick of Unchained Malady though. Reminded me of Patrick Swayze. Robson had MAD cross-eyed bizniz.

Any year with two Outhere Bros no. 1s must be pretty good.

OK, some of the injustice done to Simply Red is now being rectified - it is on level pegging with a very dreary Wasis song.

But what about CELINE? COME ON POPTIMISTS - how can you say you like megaballads and not be ticking this immense Wailosaurus?

I actually had this song stuck in my head yesterday! It gets a vote from me! I saw Celine live you know, my stepsister was a bit obsessed with her. I of course was AN SULKY TEEN and hated every second.

Then again I think everything on this is good to the extent that both Robson and Jerome get ticks.

It also has a grebt "NO NO NO NOOOOOOO" breakdown in the middle!

Def the best Celine song.

Is it the one where her boyfriend does a 'Leader Of The Pack' in the video? If so that should have got a tick from me as it is v. moving etc. etc.

Outhere Brothers!

We had a kind of music snobbery thing going on with them in the school playground - me and this kid called Stephen decided we were better than the others, 'cos we both had the import version of the album. It was cooler because it had more swear words on it, and a big sticker on the cassette case saying HMV IMPORT. Though Stephen wore an Outhere Brothers t-shirt one mufti day, which obviously made him much cooler than me anyway.

Why is this doing better? It's miles better that Back For Good (which I ticked, despite being largely bored of it by now).

You could argue that they've betrayed the song by reforming, I suppose!

'Sup with the "Earth Song" hate? Seems to me to be one of MJ's few great 90's singles!
