Lamest Entry Ever

I have now done a huge spreadsheet with all the Pazz and Jop data, and am prepared to do a gigantuous tournament poll by a complex method of my own choosing. I think this will be quite entertaining, as it's a wider range of music covered than the Now poll winners one.

Anyway you're getting one whether you like it or not. The question is, what do we do about the 06 entries? Do we wait a month or so until P&J under its new management comes out? Do we instead go with the self-claimed spiritual heir of the old P&J poll, Jackin Pop - OR do we ignore both and start the tournament polls tomorrow?

There is no option for "stop wasting your time doing polls". I find it oddly relaxing and quite therapeutic.

[Poll #907296]

Bonus content: these are the records which got NO votes at all on the Poptimists P&J polls.

Bob Dylan: "The Groom's Still Waiting at the Altar"
Deniece Williams: "Silly"
John Fogerty: "Rock & Roll Girls"/"Centerfield"
The Smithereens: "Blood and Roses"/"Behind the Wall of Sleep"
Bruce Springsteen: "War"/"Merry Christmas Baby"
Arrested Development: "Revolution"
R. Kelly: "I Wish"
U2: "Walk On"
R. Kelly: "Step in the Name of Love (remix)"
Jadakiss Featuring Anthony Hamilton: "Why?"
Common Featuring the Last Poets: "The Corner"

Let the record show that I would have voted for "Behind the Wall of Sleep" were I a poptimist member at the time of that poll. (I was still just lurking). (Then again, I haven't checked the poll to make sure there weren't 9 better songs on the poll, but I doubt I would have left it unticked). No point doing a worst poll because "Centerfield" would win were there any justice in this world.

hmm, Bruce's "Merry Christmas Baby" is horrible too...

Boo, I like both of those Fogerty songs (and the Smithereens ones are okay, although I'm not sure I'd go so far as to say "I like them").

Yeah, I would have ticked Centerfield if there hadn't been x better songs to tick ahead of it.

Myspace says it's Frank's birthday, so Happy Birthday Mr Kogan.

(Back on topic: I suppose, given FK's particular devotion to P&J over the years, that rather than put this question to a democratic vote you could let him decide the matter as a Special Birthday Treat haha)

Thanks Jeff!

I was invited to JP and not P&J so JP >>>>>> P&J

the Jadakiss/Anthony Hamilton song is pretty good! not heard the others though...

I say wait for the 2006 poll results.

Were you open to the idea of doing a tournament of tournaments: a megapoll where all the winners of all the polls -- UK #1s, P&J, Now!, Canons -- face off against each other?

Canon-ball

The canons will take some time to complete! There are an awful lot of artists that have had more than 10 UK Top 40 singles. At some point I promise to actually publish the results of all the canons so we can see once and for all what is actually CANON. If that makes any sense at all.

I'm kind of surprised "Why" didn't get any ticks! Had I known I would have given it one (maybe...forget which year that was, actually). Also, I think a poll like this might be more effective if it were a minimum number of votes, say 3 or less? Unless this is a one-time deal, in which case maybe not. (But would we be picking best or worst?)

I guess this isn't a poll at all, just a "bonus." Never mind!

Definitely want a "worst" poll as well, even with a mere 11 songs. Some of these are pretty good, the two R. Kellys are listenable, the other Fogerty track isn't bad, ditto "Why." (Interesting possibilities: should you have us vote "worst" or "which of these aren't worst.) Suspect that some of these were just unheard, rather than widely disliked.

There's a strong majority against waiting for P&J, even if we're divided about whether to go with Jackin' Pop. (Do all voters realize that Jackin' Pop's been published already, so to do it would just be a matter of running one more poll, which we could do in a snap?)
