This is about Proving By Science how good an album really is. And it would appear that Pulp's 'Different Class' is officially 76% good putting it the previous three albums in the rankings. Shockah!

this album divides so easily into GREAT SONGS and CRAP SONGS and there is not really any in-between!

Mama is pretty much my most hated song ever. Just thinking about it is making me ill.

I have this album on RIGHT NOW and it is wonderful.

MY MARKS EXPLAINED:

Wannabe, 9: Ground-breaking pop masterpiece. You all know why. Only a 9 because it's not as good as...
SYBT, 10: One of my favourite songs ever. Has reduced me to tears of joy on occasion. The girls working in harmony together brilliantly. What more can I say? I'm a sucker for a harmonica solo. Slick, sexy & perfect.
2 Become 1, 7: Cheesy lyrics and Posh finally getting to sing a line on her own. But still a great tune.
Love Thing, 8: Again, a brilliant melody line to an upbeat dance choone. Unfortunately features BAD RAPPING from Mel B otherwise would have scored higher.
Last Time Lover, 10: "Do you think I'm really cool and sexy? Do you really want to get with me?" Yes, yes I do. I'm giving this a 10 mostly for the outro to the middle eight (which amazingly features GOOD RAPPING from Mel B!) which is has a fantastic bassline breakdown that Max Martin clearly nicked for all his good songs ever.
Mama, 10: Another one that actually makes me cry because the lyrics are so lovely. I loathed this when it came out, but then again I loathed anything that even hinted at sentimentality. Thankfully I've since come to my senses and accepted the fact that those strings & acoustical guitar make my brain go SPRONG in some mystical way. Gospel choirs always help as well, innit.
WDYTYA, 10: Disco stomper. Geri in Union Jack dress doing this at the Brits. Full of amazingness & 100% pop songcraft genius. The song Take That wish they'd released.
SKOF, 8: OK this one might have a touch on the Brand New Heavies about it, but the album is getting it's breath back after nearly passing out on the previous track. The verse is a tad on the weak side but the chorus is great and has NYEEEEERRRR noises over the top and the middle eight sounds like CHIC guitar. Ace.
N4ked, 6: The only track I'm likely to skip, mostly because of the lyrics being a bit rubbish on this. I don't like the heavy handed moralistic chorus but the verse and the talking bit is GREBT ("Hello?") Alas more BAD RAPPING from Mel B.
IYCD, 10: The most 90s sounding track on here. This is no bad thing! A great closing track with hoover bass that goes VRRRRROOOOM, GOOD RAPPING IN SPANISH from Mel B and a cracking brass sting sampled from PARLIAMENT over the top.

OVERALL, 10: They might not have the best voices individually but the Spicers sound so good when they sing together. Couple that with some brilliant pop songwriting and you can't fail. As long as you like the nineties.

your scores = 88% for the album...'technically' a 9 out of 10 but bordering on 10 (90% and above). hurrah!

Science speaks! But few albums are as enjoyable to listen to as this one. It's even better than 12 Stops And Home by The Feeling. :-)

I can only assume that people are rating this album badly because they haven't heard the grebt album tracks.

To be honest I don't even know if I should fill this poll in. I hatehatehatehatehatehatehate this album with a vehemence bordering on mild insanity. I hated the singles. I hated the album tracks. I hated the fact it was played on repeat in every form room, school bus, friend's bedroom, party, shop, etc. I went in and it honestly made me incredibly miserable.

I remember being furious when it first came out that my mother wouldn't let me get a copy, just to fit in, then when I actually heard the album being rather grateful I could just say 'my mum won't let me listen to it' rather than 'I fvcking hate the Spice Girls, their music, their voices and especially their stupid attitude.'

I think a lot of my hate may come from the fact it was cool and even if I had liked the Spice Girls I never would have been cool enough to be allowed to hang around with everyone else doing Spice Girls stuff, so it was easier not to in a lot of ways but still... the music really, truly is dire. None of them could sing, they looked appalling, etc. which might work if you're the Sex Pistols but I just don't think 'Whoo, Girl Power, you can get away with acting like a stupid little wh0re if you stick out your tongue and make a peace sign!' was much of a statement.

It did, for some reason, completely screw over every female currently between the ages of about sixteen and twenty, however, with occasional exceptions.

I like Geri Halliwell on her own, controversially, however.

I hated them at the time as well. I hated their blatant commercialism and their (I thought) pathetic attempt at empowering young girls. I was already empowered! I didn't need them! I wrote in many letters to Planet Sound expressing this in a variety of different ways (including poetry). But now I can safely appreciate the pop genius of this album, putting my ire to one side. Aside from anything else, it's great dancing music. Swing it shake it move it make it who do you think you are?

I did try them again recently but 'Wannabe' still strikes me as truly dire and the rest get worse... I feel like a bit of a failed pop fan for not liking them but they just fill me with rage. :/

Fair enough. There are still some canonically accepted pop classics that I can't stand! However I can't deny that Spice fills me with utter JOY. And not just because I found it in Oxfam for £2.29 about four months ago.

I BEAT YOU i acquired spice and spiceworld combined for £1.50 in a BRITISH HEART FOUNDATION shop :D

it is their funk you fear!

I only know the singles from this LP. I know all of Spiceworld tho, and have always assumed therefore that that one is the canonical SG album.
