The Friday Canon: QUO DEATH

With 54 UK Top 40 singles, we can't really ignore the Quo. Even if most of their songs sound the same, someone must be buying them! You have up to EIGHTEEN ticks to determine which Status Quo singles are canonical and which are not!

Quo FACTS
  • Come On You Reds was knocked off the No.1 spot by Wet Wet Wet's Love Is All Around. Boo or yay? I can't decide!
  • Francis Rossi used to be in The Scorpions! Sadly it wasn't this Scorpions.
  • They were in Corrie for a bit being sued by Les Battersby!
  • The Quo have spent in excess of seven and a half years (418 weeks) in the British Singles Chart - the eleventh highest ever. That is quite amazing I suppose.
  • More Quo Facts like that last one here!

As my nickname is Qo, I am always very happy when Steve Wright plays them on Radio 2 and says "We love Quo! You can't beat the Quo!". Therefore I am more favourably disposed to them than I otherwise might be. Hooray for 'Down down' though.

Down the Dustpipe is also ace and about "down".

One of them lives in Purley I think. Rossi, on the Webb(?) estate.

Pauline Fowler sees Rick Parfitt a lot?

How funny, I ticked only three songs and they're the same ones everyone else did.

"In the Army" now is a big hit over here, for some reason, in the same way that that "Alice" song by Smokie is.

It's the only Quo song that doesn't sound exactly the same as all the others - which makes it stand out. And it was their second biggest hit too, makes you wonder why they didn't vary their sound more.

I never knew Lord Sukrat was such a Quohead.

Got to Number 20 according to Everyhit

It's also grebt (and more or less established their signature sound).

Wikipedia reveals that their cover of [livejournal.com profile] freakytigger fave, All Around My Hat, featuring Maddy Prior herself, failed to crack the top 40, reaching #47 in 1994.

Sadly nothing about the QUO DANCE as compulsorily performed at all 1980s wedding receptions (or at least the ones I went to).

I've often wondered about Quo in recent years - how they survived, how their late 70s/early 80s stuff was...in the end i managed 11 ticks with the rest being pretty atrocious.

the first two singles are great tho!

    [identity profile] jauntyalan.livejournal.com 2006-11-03 02:31 pm (UTC)(link)
they survived on Jim'll Fix It appearances alone

I went to a Status Quo concert. Every single song sounded the same, "the Wanderer". They were supported by Mike Love's Beach Boys. It was pretty fun, really.
