Diva CANON: Cher

Insert your own Cannon joke here! The Queen of Ridiculous Outfits is old enough to be Madge's mum and is still going strong - her Las Vegas residency is booked for 2008 once Celine's finished doing her turn. Now you get EIGHT ticks to denote which of Cher's UK Top 40 hits you hold dearest! Before the angry Sonny Bono fans start kicking up a ruckus, I've omitted the S&C hits to keep things Cher-focused. Instead, here are some amazing Cher facts:

  • She went for the part of Morticia in the Addams Family film.
  • Her real name is Cheryl.
  • She is dyslexic.
  • Currently, Cher is involved with the US Army's "Operation Helmet". This is less interesting than it sounds.

But that's not where his fanny is! Just to check, our Chezza there isn't Ms Cherry? Because that would be terrible.

I ticked "Strong Enough" not cos I actually remember it but because I hope it was a REALLY REALLY flagrant rewrite of Believe. Probably it was a ballad tho.

Gypsies TrampXoR and Thieves - masterpiece.

    'Strong Enough' sounded quite Steps-y...

I only ticked 6 - what does 'Dark Lady' sound like?

    [identity profile] martinskidmore.livejournal.com 2006-09-01 12:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I could only really tick four, which isn't much for over 40 years.

of course she is on lots of the Spector recs you dig

    [identity profile] giddyoldgoat.livejournal.com 2006-09-01 03:34 pm (UTC)(link)
erm that was to Martin (I'm never gonna get the hang of this LJ biz, 'the other place' is so much easier to use - on the now infrequent days when it's actually working)

was it racialist to equate gypsies with tramps and thieves in the way this song implies?

    [identity profile] freakytigger.livejournal.com 2006-09-01 03:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes! BUT it's "the people of the town" who are using these epithets, so it is they who r the racists.

Cher's UK singles that failed to go top 40:

I Feel Something In The Air
    We All Sleep Alone
    Heart Of Stone
    You Wouldn't Know Love
Baby I'm Yours (not even top 75!)
    Love Hurts
    Whenever You're Near

    anyone heard any of these?

    [identity profile] lockedintheatti.livejournal.com 2006-09-01 01:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I have a real soft spot for We All Sleep Alone - it was from her big comeback album that was produced by her then-shag from Bon Jovi, so it's all Bon Jovi-style soft rock. Same album as I Found Someone which I appear to be the only one hear loving.

I'd always heard that she took the name Cher because she was part-Cherokee, rather than because her name was Cheryl. Is this wrong?

    [identity profile] chezghost.livejournal.com 2006-09-01 01:08 pm (UTC)(link)
wasn't she actually born in THE LEBANON?

    [identity profile] jeff-worrell.livejournal.com 2006-09-01 01:23 pm (UTC)(link)
so not Cherokee then but Cher-Oakey?

    *ducks*

    [identity profile] lockedintheatti.livejournal.com 2006-09-01 01:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Think she's actually Armenian. Like Andre Agassi. And System of a Down.

    [identity profile] anatol-merklich.livejournal.com 2006-09-02 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
True. Her name is Serkassian or something; Agassi is originally Agassian.

As recently as the spring of 2006, there were unsubstantiated reports circulating the internet that Cher was dating television star Lee Tergesen.
