JAYSUS this was tough, apart from Pulp both ways and Blur. Clash of the olden ages!

[identity profile] braisedbywolves.livejournal.com 2006-08-16 12:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha can you guess which letter was crucially missed from this enthusiasm?

[identity profile] jeff-worrell.livejournal.com 2006-08-16 12:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought these were all no-brainers. And (so far) I seem to be with the majority in each case. Baaaa.

I ph34r I shall miss all the remaining rounds of this as I'm on holiday from tomorrow. So play nice and don't let the Pet Shop Boys win!

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2006-08-16 12:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Much more skewed to the present day, this time round!

Ugh Pulp v Grillaz, horrid draw, I want neither to win.

[identity profile] bengraham.livejournal.com 2006-08-16 12:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree, Pulp and Gorillaz should both be kicked out in favour of Ace of Base.

[identity profile] juror8.livejournal.com 2006-08-16 12:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Now _why_ on earth could Lex possibly hate "Common People"...

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2006-08-16 12:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I like 'Common People' and ticked it (not as good as 'Sorted For Es And Wizz', but it shouldn't be here AT ALL. As I recall it was about, I dunno, the tenth best song off its Now? Way inferior to virtually everything else which got through (except, of course, the inexplicably loved Grillerz).

[identity profile] dubdobdee.livejournal.com 2006-08-16 12:23 pm (UTC)(link)
even tho i won it at the PUBQUIZ es and wizz is VERY POOR and deteremined me to realise that pulp are NO GOOD

[identity profile] katstevens.livejournal.com 2006-08-16 12:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't. I'm totally sick of it. Whereas I liked Dirty Harry!

[identity profile] braisedbywolves.livejournal.com 2006-08-16 12:28 pm (UTC)(link)
That bracket, it actually ends a lot earler, right? Given the actual contents of that NOW (http://community.livejournal.com/poptimists/122610.html?thread=1877490), I might ask you to name the other 9 songs.

[identity profile] juror8.livejournal.com 2006-08-16 12:32 pm (UTC)(link)
"Buddy Holly"! That's it.

[identity profile] braisedbywolves.livejournal.com 2006-08-16 12:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm thinking the 'Amitri myself.

[identity profile] juror8.livejournal.com 2006-08-16 12:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Momus to thread.

[identity profile] bengraham.livejournal.com 2006-08-16 12:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel really sorry for Ace of Base. They have 2 of the 64 finalists, you'd have thought they'd have had a decent chance of at least getting one song through to round 2. But then they get drawn against 'Toxic' and 'Love Machine' - how unfair is that? If they'd come up against Gorillaz or Pulp, they might have had a much better chance. Bad luck AoB.

[identity profile] katstevens.livejournal.com 2006-08-16 12:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Seconded. Poor old Ace Of Base!

[identity profile] hoshuteki.livejournal.com 2006-08-16 12:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Man that was the hardest contest, AoB vs Britney's "Toxic"! I voted for the Ace, because they deserve a win but it is futile and they will be DENIED.

[identity profile] blue-russian.livejournal.com 2006-08-17 08:08 am (UTC)(link)
You know, I know 'Toxic' is great and all, but somehow it is always dwarfed by her other stuff. I just couldn't vote for it over the Aces. Difficult to believe that they won't get through to the second round, given how strong both of those songs were.

[identity profile] braisedbywolves.livejournal.com 2006-08-16 12:23 pm (UTC)(link)
See, the problem with 'Cry Me A River', as determined by poptimist science, is that no-one on the dancefloor has any idea what it is until it hits the chorus.

The other problem is that it's up against House Of Love.

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2006-08-16 12:54 pm (UTC)(link)
It's ridiculously better than House of Love, and the idea that no one knows what it is until the chorus is nonsense! It's got an unmistakeable intro and riff.

[identity profile] braisedbywolves.livejournal.com 2006-08-16 01:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Poptimist science = it was played and people looked confused.

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2006-08-16 01:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Cis and I were rockin' it on the dancefloor from the word GO, or rather, from the instant we heard those unmistakeable Enigma chorales and rain sounds and gorgeous strings.

People looked confused because it's not a very dancefloor kind of song, not because they didn't recognise it! Also they were drunk, probably.

[identity profile] jauntyalan.livejournal.com 2006-08-16 01:40 pm (UTC)(link)
"unmistakeable Enigma chorales and rain sounds"

way to build up a song. that makes it sound like the dullest song ever. which is nearly right.

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2006-08-16 01:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Private and diffident = good!

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2006-08-16 01:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, luck of the draw and all. I think it will beat HOL though!

To sort out tiebreaks maybe a marks-out-of-10 face-off would do it. I am getting very nervous about the Aaliyah/Massive Attack current tie, it's almost as bad as following tennis matches online.

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2006-08-16 01:17 pm (UTC)(link)
OH MY GOD I DIDN'T SEE THAT UNTIL NOW

POPTIMISTS WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO ME

MY POOR HEART

[identity profile] awesomewells.livejournal.com 2006-08-16 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
YOU ARE ALL PHILISTINES! HOW DARE YOU LET THE MIGHTY HOUSE OF LOVE LOSE TO THIS RUBBISH JUSTIN SONG?!

This was the easiest for me. I didn't need to think for more than a second about any of them.

[identity profile] blue-russian.livejournal.com 2006-08-17 08:10 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, exactly. Though I quite like the Justin song.

[identity profile] braisedbywolves.livejournal.com 2006-08-17 11:10 am (UTC)(link)
I think the word "Americans" is also involved.

YOU R ALL INDIE

[identity profile] byebyepride.livejournal.com 2006-08-16 12:27 pm (UTC)(link)
For yr dissing of Ace of Base.

[identity profile] katstevens.livejournal.com 2006-08-16 12:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Come on Anita and Ray! You can do it!

[identity profile] the-roofdog.livejournal.com 2006-08-16 02:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Shockingly, I think they can. And even more shockingly, I think Damon Allbrans & the Blur band can.

Timbo Bimbo?

[personal profile] koganbot 2006-08-16 03:45 pm (UTC)(link)
You know, I'm realizing that a lot of Timbaland's ticky-tacky sounds are REALLY IRRITATING (though I did tick him twice). "Cry Me A River" vs. "House of Love" was the hardest for me, and at the moment my vote is tipping the balance. Agh, I feel so guilty. No matter what I do I feel the pain. But "River" is beautiful (though not nearly as good as "Gone" or "Tearin' Up My Heart" or "Bye Bye Bye" or "It's Gonna Be Me" or "I Want You Back").

"All That She Wants" got an unlucky draw. Whereas "The Sign" kind of sucks.

I just realized I haven't voted yet on "Fascination" vs. "Disco 2000" ('cause I'm kinda meh on both of them). I'm open to bribes.
