The History Of Pop Part 62 aka Thanks to you now I get what I want

Now 62 brings us almost up to date - when we started the Now polls this was the most current Now album available. Since then there have been two more, which we'll deal with next week, and then that's yer lot. Now 62 has plenty of meat on it, unlike the last one, which has yielded our lowest-rating winner ever, with only 60% tickys. And that winner is...either Gorillaz or Rachel Stevens. When I did this poll I didn't know it was a draw, though, so the tie-breaker question will be on a separate poll, probably bunged on the end of a POPFITE. Sorry about that!

[Poll #784792]

Lots of good stuff here! Plus I've heard most of it thanks to purchase of magick digital box last autumn = Hits TV Hurrah!

I haven't heard that Rachel Stevens song. Yes, yes, shoot me now...

How is Rachel doing so badly here? It's by far her best single!

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2006-08-03 01:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Especially as 'So Good' which is VERY DULL is on course to win the last one! WEIRD.

I would never have thought there would be a Rachel Backlash on Poptimists! Aren't we meant to be her only loyal fans, or something?

this is not only rachel's best song, it is the best song of the year.

COME ON. that sugababes is only just over "meh". the rachel has me bouncing around like a child. in public. on the top deck of a bus.

[identity profile] chezghost.livejournal.com 2006-08-03 02:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I am also suprised then Rachel is languishing in sixth place.

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2006-08-03 02:13 pm (UTC)(link)
it's not rachel's best song! it's her best single but her best song is either 'funny how' or 'dumb dumb' or 'crazy boys' or 'i will be there'.

I agree that Rachel should not be languishing but the Sugababes song is totally infectious.

Sugababes single is their worst First Single Off An Album. It's not BAD and no one actively dislikes it but it's not a patch on most of their earlier material.

nah, that's what I thought at first as well because it's not the BOOM that 'Freak Like Me' was, but the melody just zigzags everywhere and the production froths and fizzes and it really is bliss. A really good dancefloor filler too - it pwned that winter.

[identity profile] chezghost.livejournal.com 2006-08-03 02:22 pm (UTC)(link)
i liken it to Sheena Easton's '9 To 5 (Morning Train)' for some reason

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2006-08-03 02:24 pm (UTC)(link)
it's the kind of great pop which reminds me of loads of things at the same time - 'Last Christmas', the DJ Koze remix of 'Hot Love', the froth off the top of 'Milkshake' - but sounds like none of them.

I think I just quoted my own review of it verbatim.

Despite being in the lead it's no-one's favourite so far - have we had a poll winner that no-one at all said was their favourite?

Push The Button shits all over Hole In The Head.

But, it is not quite as mighty as "Overload".

i love 'push the button', esp. with the Franz Ferdinands 'Do You Want To' shoved underneath as on U05 - shonktastic :)

[identity profile] jauntyalan.livejournal.com 2006-08-03 02:21 pm (UTC)(link)
actually a good point. yes her best single. (today.) also agreed about dumb dumb. (wot is happening??)

[identity profile] chezghost.livejournal.com 2006-08-03 02:23 pm (UTC)(link)
'dumb dumb' really doesn't stand out on Come And Get It as much as anything else, for me (i'd say 'Every Little Thing' was better tho funnily i didn't like that much at first)

Her teardrops will explode into the night that glitters

'Dumb Dumb' has great lyrics! And that amazing handclap moment.

'Every Little Thing' should have been a single, it's total office party singalong stuff. I still think that the right singles could have made Rachel more of a success. That is to say: 'I Said Never Again' as lead, 'Crazy Boys' second, 'Nothing Good About This Goodbye' third, 'Every Little Thing' fourth (at Xmas time). 'Negotiate With Love' or 'Funny How' or 'I Will Be There' as hangover fifth if necessary.

she would never have got 4 singles out by Christmas 2005 unless the first one had come out in January (this could've worked actually, esp. as January slump might've enabled I Said Never Again to chart higher)

'Negotiate With Love' did come out very early in 05 didn't it? And still only barely scraped the top 10.

it came out in April but they were so awful and tentative in plugging Rachel i think. maybe even worse than Annie's publicists/promoters!
