The History Of Pop Part 62 aka Thanks to you now I get what I want

Now 62 brings us almost up to date - when we started the Now polls this was the most current Now album available. Since then there have been two more, which we'll deal with next week, and then that's yer lot. Now 62 has plenty of meat on it, unlike the last one, which has yielded our lowest-rating winner ever, with only 60% tickys. And that winner is...either Gorillaz or Rachel Stevens. When I did this poll I didn't know it was a draw, though, so the tie-breaker question will be on a separate poll, probably bunged on the end of a POPFITE. Sorry about that!

[Poll #784792]

PUSH THE (SUBMIT) BUTTON

The pain reflected in this song - ain't even half of what I'm feeling inside

This is what I said about 'We Belong Together' on the last Now poll, buried in the threading:

'We Belong Together' might be on the next one? It makes me cry and everything, all those different phrasings, Mariah kind of swimming through the lyrics as if they are her tears, the kind of song which is your bestest friend and you know everything about it and it knows everything about you, and "wait a minute this is too deep, too deep".

Also I am going to do a CD of pop ballads called ABJECTION, and this will be its centrepiece.

Best. Ballad. Evah.

INJUSTICE!!

Hilary Duff not getting just deserts. I will ysi, since people seem to have forgotten what a marvel this song is!

Hilarity is amazing.

Apparently Timbaland has done a song with her and her sister!

SHUT UP PHARRELL

There are a lot of 'standards' on this terrific Now which I'm surprised to see languishing - 'Since U Been Gone', 'I Said Never Again' and '1 Thing' as well, they should be up their neck and neck with the Sugababes!

'All About Us' is incredible though, strong and confident and towering where 'All The Things She Said' was vulnerable and desperate.

oof i forgot to tick first time, fixed now.

This is an EXCELLENT CD. Amerie and Kelly Clarkson and Sugababes and Gwen and Gurls Allowed and Damian Jr Gong. The good significantly outweighs the bad (Powter, Melua, Wasis, Coldplay)

Bizarre how bad the last one was and this has a handful of absolute classics, as noted above.

Sugababes

Should not be winning this. It's certainly Any Good At All but there are so many better moments on this Now!

This is a terrific compilation, one of the best actually.

WHO VOTED FOR KATIE MELHUA?!!!

[identity profile] awesomewells.livejournal.com 2006-08-03 01:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahem.

[identity profile] umlauts.livejournal.com 2006-08-03 01:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I forgot to tick "1 Thing" but I am too lazy to go back change it.

Rachel Stevens should be winning this. "I Said Never Again" is basically everything that pop music is supposed to be. Though most of the other big songs on this are k-great too.

'Biology' might be Any Good At All...

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2006-08-03 01:33 pm (UTC)(link)
...but it's still Girls Aloud's second worst single EVER, after 'Long Hot Summer'. It's HORRIBLY produced.

A little harsher than I would've said it, but I agree that there is something slightly Wrong with it. I mean, it's very good, but it could/should be transcendent.

Lots of good stuff here! Plus I've heard most of it thanks to purchase of magick digital box last autumn = Hits TV Hurrah!

I haven't heard that Rachel Stevens song. Yes, yes, shoot me now...

[identity profile] awesomewells.livejournal.com 2006-08-03 01:47 pm (UTC)(link)
How is Rachel doing so badly here? It's by far her best single!

Pussycat Dolls

[identity profile] katstevens.livejournal.com 2006-08-03 01:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Have grown on me somewhat. Still don't like "Beep" or that one where they're all sitting on stools ala Westloife though.

Re: Pussycat Dolls

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2006-08-03 01:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I took against them initially, because they stole Tori Alamaze's song and killed her career and couldn't even sing it as well as she did. However I have a theory that because Pussycat Dolls themselves are such soulless sex-automatons, the more generic the song the better they are to it - ie they fall flat on 'Don't Cha', which is inventive and subtle, but ride the formulaic hott beatz of 'Buttonz' triumphantly.

let the bass from the speakers run through your sneakers

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2006-08-03 01:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I would not have imagined that one year on, Rihanna would have become a bigger popstar than Amerie.

'Pon De Replay' is in the same r&b continuum as Lumidee's 'Never Leave You', Nina Sky's 'Move Ya Body' and Cassie's 'Me & U' - r&b summer jams which act as counterpoints to the massive Beyoncé/Amerie/Xtina hits, slight and understated and almost nothingy, but no less affecting for all that.

[identity profile] whalefish.livejournal.com 2006-08-03 02:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Am I the only one who thinks that's Rachel Stevens' worst single, then? It's even worse than that More More More cover to my ears.

[identity profile] chezghost.livejournal.com 2006-08-03 02:08 pm (UTC)(link)
why don't you like it?

the 'more more more' cover is flat but hardly offensive.

I meant to vote for: Pharrell ft Gwen Stefani - Can I Have It Like That as the worst. As it is.

This is my absolute favourite Now Album EVAH. It is.

Is Electricity a cover version or a re-release because every time I hear it I feel like I'm getting deja vu.

Prob'ly too late to post this, but Girl Authority's "Hollaback Girl" is even better than Gwen's--far more extreme in the bananas dept.
